OFL VIII: The Division Previews

Postby Jim Brown » Sun Sep 10, 2017 3:27 pm

Welcome to the division previews. We've lost some, and gained new victims.. err, blood. Bitter rivalries renew, competition as always will be fierce as titles need held on to in some cases, and revenge needing dished out in others!

IT'S GOOD TO BE BACK!!!

AFC NORTH
In recent seasons the Swines and then the Bengals have done their best to upset the Indians, but for the last two seasons it's been business as usual with the Indians ruling the roost. That's no mean feat because despite their four wins in seven seasons this is one of the toughest, most competitive leagues. The Indians won it with a 9-7-0 record, the lowest of their four titles, despite winning the division a few games before the end of the season. Rivalry in the AFC North is bitter at times. Sparks will fly again this season.

If they are to win again, the Indians will face fierce competition again from the Swines, Bengals and Riverkings, who all finished 7-9 last year, showing just how close this can be. Now all four teams have experience of the OFL draft, it might just be that draft points are the thing that sways games. The Bengals in particular look to have secured some highly decent scoring picks while the Indians from 29th did better than expected. The Riverkings and Swines may need to rely on coaching skills for points!

PRE-SEASON PREDICTION: A close fought division again as they all beat each other in division games. The BENGALS seem to have the best draft, and could secure a second title.

AFC EAST
What do Lipizzaners, Mudpluggers, and Mustangs have in common? They have all won the AFC East, and they have all gone! Perhaps it's only justice that the Gecko 6ers are rewarded for their OFL loyalty with four wins in this division. The 6ers were left smarting in the last game of the season as they lost out in the division to the Mustangs in a winner-take-all match-up, and now the chance for revenge has gone as the Mustangs galloped off into the sunset, never to be seen again.

The rookie Aviators are now the sophomore Juggernauts as Jaydubs undergoes a name-change. That first season saw a satisfying 8-8 record and they'll expect more this time round. The Comancheros second season turned into a nightmare. From an almost division-winning rookie season and a 10-6 record they plunged to 3-13 last year and they're going the wrong way! We see a new franchise in the AFC East as the DanBradley Bobcats some in to take the place of those Mustangs and it's a rough welcome as they have to take the 27th place in the draft. It all looks to be against a winning season for the Bobcats.

As far as that draft goes the Comancheros got the prime spot at #1 and even from that position only got a C+ and look to have missed out on a couple of more golden opportunities. The Juggernauts made a few picks from 13th that raised eyebrows and ended up with a D+ grade. Bobcats got C+ from 27th and the 6ers a C from 21st. All four should score some points but no-one seemed to steal a march in the draft.

PRE-SEASON PREDICTION: The Oz outfit are hard to shake in the AFC EAST and unless the Bobcats have a storming rookie season it does look like the 6ers experience is going to see them fighting for the title again.

AFC SOUTH
The home of the Superbolbg Champions - the Johno Colts - back to back winners of the division and the only team in the OFL to win two different divisions. That's quite a resume! But this is not a one-team division by any means. The Kankeano Bears still hold the AFC South record for titles (3) and have themselves been to a Superbolg final, and you can bet the Bears are getting hungry again! They only just missed out, one game behind the Colts, at 9-7 last season finishing with a storming 44-6 win over the Pirates.

Speaking of the Pirates, it was a 7-9 bottom-of-the-league finish for them and they need to do better, but the Concordes were almost the fairy-tale story of the season last year, improving no end on previous seasons to almost win the division! What can we expect from them this year?

The draft could have a huge impact in the AFC South. The Colts did better than expected from last place with a B-, but that still equates to just two real scoring chances. The Concordes got automated picks and they weren't anything outstanding at a grade of C. The Bears' draft was graded C- (that's what you get when you pick the 49ers!) but they certainly have some points-scoring potential. It's the Pirates who'll look to score the most Armoury points. A C- grade, yes, but some strong picks.

PRE-SEASON PREDICTION: Colts will find it tougher this time round as all three others have genuine Armoury point potential. PIRATES to make a challenge for the title.

AFC WEST
It's a sad day for the OFL and the AFC West as we lose the head coach of the winning-most team, the LB1975 Cowboys, who won the title three times. The Cowboys name will play again this season, but this will be its last as a full franchise change is applied next season.

The Raider Pain followed up their sensational Superbolg Season 6 win with this division title and a best-ever 13-3 record in season 7. it would have been a record-equalling 14-2 had it not been for an inspired rookie Argonauts final-game performance outscoring the Pain 37-23 to finish 8-8. The Brummie Eagles came in last season with nothing really to gain and took the franchise to a 3-13 record, meaning they start their first full season with a top draft position.

That draft could be just the thing the Eagles need. They got a B- grade, with strength in four categories. The Argonauts seem to have had a peach of a draft too, grade A stuff. And with a B for the Cowboys as well, the pressure was put on the Pain way down the draft. They got a D...

PRE-SEASON PREDICTION: Tough times ahead for the Pain as all three rivals apparently have good drafts. A new name will be on the division trophy this season.

NFC NORTH
One of the most open divisions in the OFL with six different winning franchises in seven seasons. Only the globe-trotting Terminators have won it more than once. Last season the Maulers prevailed, just, with a 10-6 record, in the process resigning those Terminators to a 5-11 record, their worst ever.

The Patriots had high hopes going into the final week but close out on 9-7 as the Flaming W's stormed to a 47-10 win. All four of these teams have won this division at some point and all are eager for more. This could be one of the tightest in the OFL this season.

Draft-wise, the Terminators made hay from the #6 spot and got a B- with some crafty picks. The Flaming W's solid draft gets them a B, and the Patriots secure a B-. Finally our champs grade-out at B+ making this division one of the best of the OFL draft, and making it even more competitive. All four will score Armoury points, so this is going to be a highly tactical use of cards in season 8.

PRE-SEASON PREDICTION: The wide-open NFC NORTH will collectively produce the most Armoury points of any division.

NFC EAST
You can be forgiven for thinking there's only two teams in this league as only the Chargers (4) and the Redhawks (3) have won the NFC East in seven seasons. That might just change this season...

The Chargers were shell-shocked on the last day of the season as bitter-rivals the Tykes finally got one over on them with a shock 24-21 win, and allowed the Redhawks to snatch the title from them on 11-5 with their own 24-15 win over the Helldwellers. It was the Chargers to lose, and lose it they did! And now of course we have the last-minute replacement rookie head coach for the Redhawks. It could just be that there's a power-change afoot in the NFC East!

The Tykes finish on 9-7, their first ever winning season and what a finish as they rattled off a brace of consecutive victories. The Helldwellers close out on 4-12 but even worse, do they now face a division with three viable franchises? Well they had the draft position to make an impact of their own, and they did with a B+ and four promising picks from five, and the Tykes get a C+ grade from the 18th spot on the draft. Both the Redhawks and Chargers find the draft tough with C- and D-

PRE-SEASON PREDICTION: This is the season the TYKES take a bite at the opposition and secure a first title!

NFC SOUTH
The Bills celebrated well into the night after their journey to the NFC Championship. The loss in the Superbolg final was devastating at the time but this Bills team has got better year after year, and with the addition of the much-hyped JJ Jedi Knights making it two teams from Texas, the other being the Texan Tartans, the NFC South is looking like the Group of Death for season eight.

It went so wrong for the three-time title holders, the Texan Tartans last season, after a scintillating 2015 saw a third title with records being broken along the way, and it was a season to forget last year. The one plus was a juicy draft for 2017 at 9th. We did lose the Guttersnipes, who rounded off the Tartans miserable season with a 50-10 thumping, and in come the Jedi Knights with their female head coach (I mean, what do girls know about football??). Meanwhile, the Bills were rounding off a stunning season of their own by trouncing the 76ers on the road 31-11, producing #1 rankings all over the place in the process. The 76ers have a task ahead as the head coach attempts to run the team from a hospital bed! We all wish Laz well (but not that well he wins the division, of course!! LOL). Get well soon, Laz.

The rookie Jedi Knights got the boost of an early 5th place in the draft and would the new coach use her NFL knowledge to good effect? Looks like she did with a B- grade. Up next came the Tartans from 9th, a far cry from last season but they produce the goods with some shrewd picks, even if it drop them far down in the post-draft rankings. The 76ers C+ grade tells of another concerted effort (despite making sure of taking the Falcons for 'something'!), and even the Bills way down in 31st get a C+, making this another division with some well thought-out drafting!

PRE-SEASON PREDICTION: The closest division of all, with THREE TEAMS fighting it out for the title on the final day.

NFC WEST
There used to be only one team in this division, the Orangemen, until the Apaches came to town and raided the last two titles. The Orangemen were right there on the final day last season with a squeak to win it, but they fell foul of the awesome A-Bombs offense collapsing to a 45-3 defeat. That Bombs offense was one of the best in the OFL but they could still only finish the season 6-10!

The Apaches last-day win 21-6 over the Goldhawks saw them back-to-back champions with 10-6. It's two out of two for the Apaches now and for the Goldhawks at 4-12 it's yet another losing season - their worst so far.

The Goldhawks start the draft for this quartet at #3, and finish it with a B+ rating which jumps them to a post-draft ranking of #1 in the OFL. This could be just what the Goldhawks need for season 8. The A-Bombs offense could have done with a similar draft but a D grade suggests otherwise. The Orangemen had a chance at #14 to make an impact and look to have had success with a B- grade draft, leaving the champion Apaches, way down in 25th to grade-out at B- despite dropping to bottom of the OFL in post-draft rankings.

PRE-SEASON PREDICTION: With a better draft the A-Bombs would have been picks to win a first title, but it could just be that the ORANGEMEN grab it back from the Apaches.

And there you have it! Who'll rule the eight roosts this season? Have your say! :win: :win:

Great stuff Jim! It's great to read stuff I haven't put together! The armouries have really integrated well into the OFL and this write up shows that it gives an added depth. I think the armouries are going to be very well played by coaches this season.

It's great to be able to pull on so much history to put these write ups together!!!

Time to take a mid-season look at the previews and the predictions, just for some fun and to see how right they are!!

AFC North:
"it might just be that draft points are the thing that sways games" How right this was, but not necessarily in view of the prediction - it's the Indians who are reaping the armoury rewards!

"A close fought division again as they all beat each other in division games. The BENGALS seem to have the best draft, and could secure a second title." Not too far off - the Bengals are making fist of it chasing the Indians!

AFC East:
"The Oz outfit are hard to shake in the AFC EAST and unless the Bobcats have a storming rookie season it does look like the 6ers experience is going to see them fighting for the title again." How's that for a prediction?? 6ers and Bobcats slugging it out!

AFC South:
"Kankeano Bears still hold the AFC South record for titles (3) and have themselves been to a Superbolg final, and you can bet the Bears are getting hungry again!" The Bears hit the ground running this season, just as predicted!

"Colts will find it tougher this time round as all three others have genuine Armoury point potential. PIRATES to make a challenge for the title." Right again! The division is so tight and those Pirates are indeed making a run for it!

AFC East:
"Tough times ahead for the Pain as all three rivals apparently have good drafts. A new name will be on the division trophy this season." And it's looking to be heading that way! The rookie Cowboys are in prime spot and the Pain are having to work hard to stay in touch!

NFC South:
"This could be one of the tightest in the OFL this season." Well, not happening - the Patriots are in firm control and it's opening up

"The wide-open NFC NORTH will collectively produce the most Armoury points of any division." 42 Terminators, 27 W's, 30 Patriots, 9 Maulers - that's the potential haul from all draft picks this season 108 in total.

NFC West:
"With a better draft the A-Bombs would have been picks to win a first title, but it could just be that the ORANGEMEN grab it back from the Apaches." That might be true - the A-Bombs offense is superb but is 25 points from Armoury dragging them behind in games? Orangemen have been hot and cold and are struggling.

NFC East:
"You can be forgiven for thinking there's only two teams in this league as only the Chargers (4) and the Redhawks (3) have won the NFC East in seven seasons. That might just change this season..." It changed in different ways after the preview with the Redhawks coach dropping out!

"This is the season the TYKES take a bite at the opposition and secure a first title!" They're battling for it, chasing the Chargers and the Helldwellers are closing in too!

NFC South:
" the NFC South is looking like the Group of Death for season eight." More like the group no-one wants to win, just like the olden days!

"The closest division of all, with THREE TEAMS fighting it out for the title on the final day." Not quite that close yet, but with the Bills/Tartans going head to head at the top it only take sa 76ers revival to close it up again!

----

So, some of the predictions are really not that far off the mark and in some cases spot-on! Kudos to whomever did the previews! :D :P
