A lot of snooker fans were not pleased when Ronnie O'Sullivan was snubbed in 2017. Win a sixth world title and then launch a campaign for him to win BBC SPOTY then!
Ali Carter has put paid to that. Anthony Joshua may be fighting Deontay Wilder later on in the year and if he wins then he may be very silly odds-on to win BBC SPotY but there's always a spanner or two waiting to be thrown into the works as some left-field gamble always seemingly comes barging through.

The BBC may feel they want to wait until Anthony Joshua beats Tyson Fury when they finally award him. Who's the next best candidate? I feel it's still Lizzy Yarnold but it's Harry Kane who's second favourite right now.

Lewis Hamilton, Rory McIlroy, Andy Murray and even Johanna Konta stalk in the wings but it's probably only Lewis who is likely to win something major.

Chris Froome throws his hat into the ring as he looks likely to be the first British cyclist ever to win all three of the Tour de France, the Vuelta a España and now the Giro d’Italia.

Feel he very likely won't win BBC SPotY though as the tide of popularity has seemingly turned against cycling.

After his performance in last night's Champions League Final, I believe Gareth Bale at 66/1 maybe worth a shout. He has consistently outperformed Ronaldo in the last couple of months even though he has not been a regular starter and if he returns to the Premier League next season as seems increasingly likely, an explosive start to the new season may see him force his way into the list of contenders. Just a thought.

Being trimmed all the way down to 25/1 and less. Has won the Champions League three years running and this year, scored a stunner of a goal as well. If the year ended now, only Scousers wouldn't vote for him...probably.

Gareth Bale jumps to the head of the queue and between him and Harry Kane RIGHT NOW, it's Gareth Bale but can he pull the votes in!?

If British cycling wasn't tainted by ifs, buts and maybes then Chris Froome may be the default winner as superficially he is 'due' but it will take another Tour de France win and nothing else to happen between now and December in a very lacklustre year for British sporting success elsewhere for Chris Froome to finally win.

Mark Williams and snooker fans react to being as low as 16/1.

Gareth Bale still 66/1 with bet365 this morning but I agree a good England display in Russia could see Harry kane move ahead in the favourites stakes. How about doing a double with Jacob Rees-Mogg to be next Tory leader. He's just bought a £5m property a stone's throw from Downing Street but denied any wish to be PM so it must be true!

Harry Kane jumps to the top of the odds after getting a hattirck against Panama as he's as low as 8/11 (!?) with Boylesports but it seems almost absurd if England don't win the World Cup yet he wins BBC SPotY.

Chris Froome has apparently been banned from having a go in this year's Tour de France. :unlucky:

EDIT: Chris has been cleared to ride but with this cloud over him, still very likely won't win BBC SPotY.

Andy Murray has pulled out of Wimbledon so unless he wins the US Open then this year is over.

Harry Kane into odds-on as barring the likes of Romelu Lukaku, Kylian Mbappe-Lottin, Junior Neymar or even Antoine Grizemann getting their scoring boots on, it seems pretty damn good that Harry Kane gets the Golden Boot award at the World Cup.

Historical perspective!?

* Gary Lineker didn't win BBC SPotY back in 1986 as Nigel Mansell did. Fatima Whitbread was second and Kenny Dalgliesh was third.
* Bobby Moore won in 1966 with Barry Briggs second (speedway) and Geoff Hurst third.

With opinion of cycling seemingly at a very low ebb, Geraint Thomas has proved popular as an alternative winner for the Tour de France as he's favourite to win it with five stages left narrowly ahread of Chris "I can't go anywhere in France without someone throwing bags of liquid at me" Froome.

Some shrewdies have took a bite out of him winning BBC SPotY as Geraint Thomas is now third favourite at around 10/1. The general taint of cycling means that it will take a well-coordinated session of phone ringing to see this gamble through.
