Billboard Awards

Postby LustForLeith » Sun Apr 16, 2017 6:28 pm

All quiet on the Special bet front although I did find this one!

I found Paddy Power are offering odds on the Billboard Awards to be announced in May. The two categories are Artist of the Year and Female Artisit of the Year.

As far as I can tell the Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on album and digital songs sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social engagement. And it's for a period between March 2016 and March 2017.

With that in mind, who'll be artist of the Year?

I'm going for Adele at 5/1. She won last year for the two awards but throw into the fact she had a massive tour and ended the year as top Artist and Female Artist and I think she's got a chance.

How will she get on for the latter part of the year and the start of this one? That's a good question but I think her popularity will see her win.

Beyoncé is favourite in the Female category but I think Adele will knick that one too. Beyoncé did well with Leomoade and had a successful tour as well but I've got a feeling Adele is going to win.

In relation to Artists of the Year no person has more it more than twice which Adele would need to do this year. But I think she'll do It!

Those odds in full...

Top Artist ~

Beyonce 6/4
The Chainsmokers 13/5
Drake 10/3
Adele 5/1
Justin Bieber 11/1
Twenty One Pilots 14/1
Rihanna 20/1
The Weeknd 20/1
Ariana Grande 33/1
Shawn Mendes 33/1

Top Female Artist ~

Beyonce 8/11
Adele evens
Rihanna 20/1
Ariana Grande 20/1
Sia 33/1

If this is based on record sales then both should be Adele's in a cakewalk. No 'You turn up, you win" principle in effect...possibly but this isn't usually on my radar in regards betting on awards. First time I think I've ever seen odds for this.

Betting unavailable for Artist of the Year. You can still back Female Artist though... :?

Huh. Looks like I was wrong about Adele's sales figures but it depends what metric you use. Streaming helps make Drake top but 'traditional sales' makes Adele top instead

http://www.billboard.com/articles/colum ... um-2016-us

No idea if this has any effect on what Billboard choose but Drake was apparently the top global artist of last year...whatever that means. Drake had the biggest selling single worldwide with 'One Dance' (!?) but Beyonce narrowly sold the most albums globally ahead of Adele and Drake though.

http://variety.com/2017/music/news/beyo ... 202395667/

Drake's odds have come into 11/4. Adele drifts half a point to 11/2. Beyonce and The Chainsmokers remain unmoved.

Drake might be a lively spoiler...someone know the result already or merely guessing!?

That's what I was worried about, how exactly they're going to measure it!

Time will tell!

Mass confusion as I think the awards are tonight but they've already been announced. I think!

I think Drake is the overall winner and Beyoncé female artist of he year.

Mass confusion though!

Wouldn't be surprised in the least if the results were known before the actual show was broadcast as these type of award shows lack accountability but it's marginally better than betting on WWE which is just free money to those privy as to who 'wins'.

Beyonce was a no-show and none of the categories she won, including Top Female Artist, were shown.

Drake did indeed win Top Artist.

No idea how Paddy Power will treat this.

Afaik Paddy Power paid out.

Paddy Power/Betfair have seemingly cut back on their odds compilers. William Hill have taken up the mantle as to this year's Billboard Awards and odds up until 10pm tomorrow night. They have "Best" not "Top" though.

The complete list of nominations:
https://www.billboard.com/articles/news ... tions-list

Top Artist:
Bruno Mars 11/8
Ed Sheeran 3/1
Kendrick Lamar 5/1
Drake 4/1
Taylor Swift 6/1

Who's turning up of these five? I honestly don't know. I thought they made a concession with Ed Sheeran who is performing via video link as he's currently touring in Ireland and can't be at the BMAs physically. He's suddenly not listed as doing so for some reason.

https://www.billboard.com/articles/news ... -full-list
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/05/18/ente ... index.html

I think Ed Sheeran's a lively 3/1 shot though considering he apparently is the best selling global artist of 2017 ahead of Drake (second), Taylor Swift (third), Kendrick Lamar (fourth) and Bruno Mars (sixth). Eminem is curiously missing in the list of nominations at the BMAs.

http://variety.com/2018/music/news/ed-s ... 202710314/

One in the eye for the Brit Awards if Ed's a big winner here and well deserved, I guess, even if I don't like the fella's music.

Top New Artist:
Cardi B 1/2
Camila Cabello 5/1
Khalid 6/1
Kodak Black 8/1
21 Savage 8/1

Superficially I think the favourite here is worth taking on as she may be fobbed off with the Billboard Chart Achievement Award. Whether Camila Cabello or Khalid can take advantage remains to be seen. There is a rumour that Jennifer Lopez's guests on stage will be DJ Khaled (yuk) and Cardi B to perform "Deniro" though.

Top Female Artist:
Taylor Swift 11/10
Cardi B 6/4
Camila Cabello 5/1
Demi Lovato 8/1
Halsey 10/1

Last year it went to Beyonce and she didn't even turn up so they didn't bother showing this category on TV over in the USA. Taylor Swift doesn't look like she's turning up but statistically speaking she had the biggest selling album last year so she is 'rightfully' favourite but...

https://www.forbes.com/sites/hughmcinty ... 25646f4548

...who will be the 'special guest' sitting next to Cabila Cabillo tomorrow? Is it Taylor Swift? They are touring together.

https://twitter.com/BBMAs/status/997924358877200385

Taylor's nearby. She was performing in California on Friday so going to Nevada shouldn't be too much of a hardship.

Camila Cabello and Demi Lovato are performing. Halsey is a presenter but I am not sure about Cardi B despite the rumour she will be joining Jennifer Lopez on stage. Pink arguably should have been nominated based on album sales.

Top Male Artist:
Ed Sheeran 13/8
Bruno Mars 11/4
Kendrick Lamar 9/2
Drake 9/2
Post Malone 5/1

Ed should be an easy winner if this is based on album sales. He wins this and/or Top Artist.

If I understand the Billboard awards correctly (and I am fairly sure that I do) both winners and nominations are decided completely by the same formula and same eligibility period. The same criteria is used to judge all the main categories. So for example Taylor Swift is guaranteed to win Female Artist as she was the only female nominated for Top Artist.

The other important thing to note is the eligibility period which is April 8 2017 to March 31 2018 and only 'points' within the period count. Bruno Mars' album 24k Magic was released November 2016 so the first six months of sales/streams/radio play don't count (which is why it isn't nominated for album). Same thing with Ed Sheeran ÷ was released early March so opening week sales don't count nor does the first 10 weeks of 'Shape of You'. Whereas Kendrick Lamar's album was released April 14th and all of it will count.

Billboard gives big clues in the calendar year charts which acts are ahead. DAMN. was the biggest album of the calendar year (https://www.billboard.com/charts/year-e ... 200-albums) and that is before you take away some of Sheeran/Mars due to eligibility. Swift over took Lamar on pure sales but not on sales plus streams and doesn't have the singles to complete. I feel pretty good that artist of the year of going to Kendrick Lamar (and along with it Top Male Artist) if it doesn't it'll go to Sheeran for better a better performance on the radio and on the singles side of things (Shape of You + Perfect) and Swift is a banker for Top Female Artist.

Yes, no, maybe?

The caveat as to who gets nominated at the bottom of the list of nominations is this:

"Billboard Music Awards nominees are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital song sales, streaming, radio airplay, touring and social engagement. These measurements are tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Music and Next Big Sound. The awards are based on the reporting period of April 8, 2017 through March 31, 2018."

I honestly don't know what to make of Billboard's Top 200 albums of 2017 list then...

https://www.billboard.com/charts/year-e ... 200-albums

It explains why Post Malone is on the nominations list. If "DAMN" doesn't win the 'Top Billboard 200 Album' award then 'rules don't apply' particularly as I don't see Taylor Swift's "Reputation" anywhere in that list. I'm not sure why "Reputation" isn't.

It'll be mighty close as Kendrick Lamar, Bruno Mars and Ed Sheeran all have the most nominations with 15 but the fact they've very likely got Ed Sheeran on video link to perform means I don't think they'll let him leave empty-handed. He wins at least one award imo.

For me the key is, are Kendrick Lamar and Bruno Mars in attendance? If not then awarding 'no shows' on the telecast seems kind of 'out of step' if last year's show is anything to go by.

I don't necessarily think Billboard play with a straight bat in regards who wins in that it's supposed to be based solely on who they say is the 'the top whatever' by their own crazy metrics but Beyonce's no shows may suggest otherwise...if Adele had turned up, I think she might have won a few of Beyonce's awards instead.

They've announced a bunch of awards early. Kendrick Lamar did indeed win Top Billboard 200 Album and Streaming Songs Artist. Drake won Top Billboard 200 artist. Ed Sheeran won top Billboard 100 artist and Radio Songs Artist. (Lamar beat Drake for rap artist so I think Drake is out of overall contention.) I'm sticking with Lamar being the night's big winner with Sheeran the only possible spoiler.

Yeah, there's a whole host of non-televised awards released four hours ago.

https://www.billboard.com/articles/news ... list-bbmas

Ed's won four...

https://twitter.com/BBMAs/status/998260818558029825

Bruno Mars has won five...

https://twitter.com/BBMAs/status/998265851169009664

Kendrick's won six...

https://twitter.com/BBMAs/status/998263334360072193

Kenrick Lamar vs. Ed Sheeran ~

Top Billboard 200 Artist: Drake (HA!!)
Top Hot 100 Artist: Ed Sheeran
Top Streaming Songs Artist: Kendrick Lamar
Top Song Sales Artist: Ed Sheeran
Top Billboard 200 Album: Kendrick Lamar, "DAMN"

I don't know if Kendrick Lamar is in Las Vegas because he is supposed to be performing in Alabama today but I don't know exactly when. One would assume he's somehow made it to Las Vegas (it's over 2,500 miles away!), already done/cancelled his performance in Alabama or he's still in Alabama but performing/accepting by video link.

http://www.kendricklamar.com/tour/kendr ... -070000-pm

I feel Bruno Mars may spoil it for the both of us though! :(
