BEST ORIGINAL SCORE ~

It should be 'La La Land'. Not sure who thinks 'Jackie' will win here instead.

BEST ORIGINAL SONG ~

Am kinda stunned that there's been such a gamble on the Sting song but loose lips from PriceWaterhouseCoopers or what!? I'll diggedly stick with 'City of Stars' from 'La La Land' though. If the gamble's landed then the gamble's landed.

BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE ~
Image

'O.J.: Made in America' has been hoovering up most of the prizes but it wasn't nominated at BAFTA where '13th' won instead. '13th' is more timely as is 'I Am Not Your Negro' but 'O.J' is so dominant. Am taking an absolutely speculative punt on '13th'. I think despite the Netflix backing it might not put AMPAS voters off and they probably owe Ava DuVernay something after snubbing 'Selma' overall a couple of years ago.

The time has beaten me and I have SIX categories to predict but I'll put the odds up and my predictions if only for posterity...

BEST SOUND EDITING ~
Imageimage search

Picking the loudest film here is usually works which is 'Hacksaw Ridge'. 'Arrival' could easily spoil as could the nominations leader, 'La La Land'.

BEST SOUND MIXING ~
Imageimage hosting without registration

The '13 Hours...' film has been unceremoniously disqualified as one of the nominees rang up for votes which isn't in the rules leaving just four nominees.

History looks to be made with a female winning as Ai-Ling Lee is in the 'La La Land' crew. Mixing usually rewards nuances over loudness so being a musical helps.

Mahershala Ali wins the first Oscar of the night as he wins Supporting Actor foiling the Dev Patel gamble ("Take that, Oddschecker!"). Colin Paterson bigging up Jimmy Kimmel's opening monologue on BBC Radio Five Live...he's sort of the Seth MacFarlane but who's actually funny.

Last year, 'Spotlight' won the first award (original Screenplay) and the last award (Picture)...will it happen two times in a row!?

'Suicide Squad' DID win Makeup and Hairstyling! OMG!! I should have put some money on that! 'Fantastic Beasts...' wins Costume Design! UGH!! Huge odds.

BEST ANIMATED SHORT ~

Have honestly no idea. 'Piper' is Pixar an d'Pearl' is Google...maybe they'll want to reward a smaller studio.

Ugh. 'O.J. Made in America' justifies being huge odds-on as it wins Documentary Feature.

BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT ~

It could easily go to any one of these. 'The White Helmets' has seen support much like 'The Salesman' in Foreign Language as there's been a ban imposed on one of the nominees. If dip...I have no idea. Have gone random and picked 'Watani: My Homeland'.

'Hacksaw Ridge' wins Sound Mixing (the longest losing streak is over as Kevin O'Connell finally wins!). 'Arrival' wins Sound Editing. People bet 'Hacksaw Ridge' into odds-on in the WRONG category. Some BIG odds against winners so far.

'La La Land' is 0-for-3 so far and can only win ten now.

BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT ~

'Ennemis Intérieurs' is arguably the most serious of the five. I've no idea here and going for an outsider in the form of 'La Femme et le TGV'.

Viola Davis wins for Supporting Actress.

There's been money in-running on 'Moonlight' to win Best Picture at bet365 as it goes down to 9/4! I'll believe it when I see it!

BEST VISUAL EFFECTS ~

I'd be surprised if this didn't go to 'The Jungle Book' even with late money on 'Deepwater Horizon'.

What happens when the wrong winner is announced!? That's what happens! Drama as Faye Dunaway announces 'La La Land' as the winner of Best Picture but 'Moonlight' wins justifying the gamble. Ugh. What a bizarre and weird night. I had a horrible Oscars. :lose:

The hate for 'La La Land' for it to not win Best Picture was real. Truly odd. Historically you can pinpoint how difficult it is for musicals to win and 'La La Land' joins the likes of 'Cabaret' of winning lots of awards but ultimately losing. 'Moonlight' was 20/1 back in September!?

Great updates Stereoman :win:

I wasn't confident that LA LA Land would win but went for the wrong choice with Manchester By The Sea.

Always next year!

Paddy Power traditionally would have weird odds such as on "Who will design the dress of the Best Actress winner?" which is so incredibly niche. This year, they've wisely not put up odds as the supposedly strong rumour is that Emma Stone will be wearing Chanel and possibly gold/yellow in colour.
I was rightish about the colour (I'd call that gold!) but I'd have lost money as it was Givenchy. 1700 hours to make that dress!? WHUT!?

Generally very tough and only in the last days and hours was there any sense of momentum as money flowed in on certain nominees...I keep saying it every year but someone HAS to know what won as you don't bet unless you do know. I have put the 'Keys to Victory' for Best Picture up in the Oscars 2018 thread as lightning may strike thrice. Some Smuggy McSmuggikins over at Betting Emporium* boasting about how they got the best odds on some of the trickier categories. Big whoop-de-do. I will not pay for tipsters.

* Someone at Paddy Power foolishly putting up odds of 'to make the final table' at a poker tournament very likely on my suggestion over at the Blonde Poker forums...no bookie will now generally quote odds on 'to make the final table' at some random poker tournament now though. Neil Channing won on an event he punted on (to win the event and to make the final table) and won over six figures from Paddy Power! He set up that website from his winnings! Calls himself a Sensei! Bloody hell! Neil Channing should owe me at least a pint!
