Fans of The Simpsons have voiced their ambivalence at the long-teased 'beloved character' death in the cartoon series.

In the season 26 premiere, called 'Clown In The Dumps', which aired in the US last night, it was revealed that the character to die was Krusty The Clown's father, Rabbi Hyman Krustofski, voiced by comic legend Jackie Mason.

Show boss Al Jean had previously teased the character as having been an Emmy-winner, putting the likes of Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Yeardley Smith, Nancy Cartwright, Hank Azaria and Harry Shearer's characters in the frame.

But many took to Twitter following the show to voice their displeasure.

It was just a shame that the actress who voice Edna Krabappel, Marcia Wallace, passed away earlier this year after losing the fight to breast cancer.

I'm sure after her death the makers of the show had Bart write a message of condolence on the chalk board during the opening of the show
