Golf Tips - 'Player of The Week' 2021 (W/B 11th October)

Postby PompeyJim » Mon Oct 11, 2021 3:35 pm

Welcome to Week 41 of Player of the Week 2021, hope everyone are keeping safe and well.

Three winners and a 50/1 runner up last week, Jin-Young Ko (15/2) won for Caliace, Sungjae Im won for STEVEOCN and Phil Mickelson won for ju29ro. Matthew Wolff (50/1) was a runner up for lola1183.

There are seven tournaments this week featuring the PGA Tour's CJ Cup.

If you have not played in previous weeks then please feel free to come and have a go, below are the competition rules and scoring.

Player of the Week 2021:

In addition to a weekly selection we are asking members to nominate a golfer to follow for the year, once you have submitted your golfer to follow for the year ahead you do not need to post he/she every time you enter a weekly pick.

We will confirm each week with the weekly selections if your golfer to follow for the year is active.

The golfer to follow for the year can be from any of the recognised tours and a selection will be required when members post their first weekly entry for 2021. This selection will earn points every time they win or finish runner up in a tournament, in addition to any potential points from the weekly selection.

*Your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' selection can also be a weekly pick at any time you wish throughout the season, scoring will be the usual weekly points criteria plus 100 points if he/she wins the tournament or 50 points for finishing runner up.

The competition scoring is detailed below.

A key factor in the feedback from OLBG golf fans following ‘Player of the Week’ is the analysis which accompanies a member's selection so we require at least 50 WORDS explaining why you think your golfer is a good bet, this is just a few lines and extremely useful for readers looking to follow your selection.

- For your first entry of 2021 we require your 'Golfer to Follow' for the year AND your selection for that week.
- After a 'Golfer to Follow' has been submitted it will then be ONE selection per week, with at least 50 words explaining your pick.
- The same golfer CAN be selected even if he/she has already been picked by another member.
- If your player withdraws BEFORE the tournament starts you can select a new pick as long as it is received before the cut off for entries.
- Deadline for entries each week will be the first tee off time of the tournament your player is competing.

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- 2nd = 50 points
- 3rd = 25 points
- 4th = 20 points
- 5th = 15 points
- 6th to 10th = 10 points

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- Tournament Runner Up = 50 points

* No other additional points (top 5, top 10, odds, leader, cut, etc) will be awarded for this pick.

- Below 10/1 = No bonus points
- 10/1 to 19/1 = (WIN) 5 points, (Top 5) 0 points
- 20/1 to 29/1 = (WIN) 10 points, (Top 5) 5 points
- 30/1 to 39/1 = (WIN) 20 points, (Top 5) 10 points
- 40/1 to 49/1 = (WIN) 30 points, (Top 5) 15 points
- 50/1 to 99/1 = (WIN) 40 points, (Top 5) 20 points
- 100/1 plus = (WIN) 50 points, (Top 5) 25 points

- **54 hole leader = 9 points
- First Round Leader = 7 points
- Made The Cut = 5 points

**Includes 36 hole leader for three round events like on the Champions Tour.

Dead Heat rules do not apply where there are place ties for point scoring, full points will be awarded.

All points will be doubled (including for Golfer of the Year picks) for the 4 majors (US Masters, The US Open, The Open Championship and the USPGA Championship)

Ryder Cup

There will be a Ryder Cup Competition with a separate prize and points will count in the Weekly Competition. The Ryder Cup is scheduled for 24th to 26th September 2021.

£15 to the Winner, this will be the member with the highest points total at the end of the year/final tournament week.
£5 to the Runner up.

- BLUE LABEL CHALLENGE (Sunshine Tour) Entry deadline 7 am Wednesday
- JAPAN OPEN (Japan Golf Tour) Entry deadline 1 am Thursday
- ANDALUCIA MASTERS (European Tour) Entry deadline 7 am Thursday
- EMPORDA CHALLENGE (Challenge Tour) Entry deadline 7 am Thursday
- THE CJ CUP (PGA Tour) Entry deadline 2 pm Thursday
- ARAMCO TEAM SERIES NEW YORK - INDIVIDUAL (Ladies European Tour) Entry deadline 2 pm Thursday

Please add your pick using the template style below so your selection and tournament is clear for readers looking to follow your pick. Please also include your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' with your first entry (you don't need to include this pick every week).

Please feel free to ask any questions and it will be great to see as many members as possible post a selection each week and a golfer to follow for the year.

Also you can join in at any time, don’t worry if you miss a week or did not post the first week etc..

Good luck!

Player - Wil Besseling (75/1)

Tournament - Andalusia Masters

Reasons for Support -

Tied 6th last week at the Acciona Open de Espana in Madrid and the Dutchman had the lead during round three with Jon Rahm and eventual winner Rafa Cabrera Bello in pursuit. 17th in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, 18th in the Cazoo Open and tied 13th in the Omega European Masters, Besseling was tied 4th in the Austrian Open earlier this year aswell as posting a couple of other Top 20 finishes. Thirteen months ago in the 2020 Estrella Damm Andalusia Masters he finished tied 3rd, two shots behind John Catlin and he was one of only five men to break 70 on a tough Saturday at Real Club Valderrama. Strong finishes in Spain on both the Challenge and European Tour, I fancy Wil Besseling has another quality ball striking week at Valderrama and he looks a sleeper pick at an each way value price of 75/1 with bet365.

PLAYER: Tony Finau

I consider Tony Finau 28/1 to be a player who is at his best on longer than average golf courses so this par 72 course of about 7400 yards with generous fairways should suit him as he is quite a long hitter ( ranked 31st in the driving distance stats last season and 13th in the previous season ) and he should do well on the par 5's here. He performed consistently last season with a total of ten top 10 finishes on the PGA tour from the 27 events that he played in and his victory in the Northern Trust in August will have boosted his confidence.

Player : Miguel Angel Jimenez 10-1 Betfair

Event : SAS Championship

Reason for Support : Jimenez can do the job if in the same mood as last week, he was the only one who gave Phil Mickleson a fright when catching him briefly on the last day back nine in The Constellation Furyk & Friends. He does still play on the European Tour now and again but you can set your watch by him, he just looks like he is coming to form now and can go well. gl all

Player - Collin Morikawa 16/1

Tournament - CJ Cup

Reasons for Support -

The American has won two major championship in a short space of time at last years PGA Championship and this years Open Championship and he was part of the winning Ryder Cup team last month in Wisconsin at Whistling Straits. Collin Morikawa is from Vegas and he has said it’s good to be able to sleep in his own bed for this event and this weeks course at Summit is a place he plays a lot of his practice golf so I say nobody in the field for this CJ Cup knows the course better than him. Morikawa is the best iron player in the game today and I am tipping home supporting and a feel good factor will see the two time major champion challenge for another PGA Tour title.

PLAYER: Jessica Korda 11/1

I'm taking the elder Korda this week since Nelly had an injury/issue during the last event. Inflamed Achilles I heard but not much detail. Anyway, Jess comes at more attractive odds seems to excel in these weak field, one-off events. Her one win this year was the first at Diamond resorts where they are paired with some celebrity. Should be feeling warmed up after the break now too.

While I would expect Nelly to drop this event of she's not feeling up to it.. but she's probably getting paid to appear, might not be so simple. Also don't want to get burned by a late WD.

Player : Bernhard Langer @13 (bet365)

Event : SAS Championship (Champions Tour)

Reason for Support: Langer is leading the Schwab Cup and this should give him some additional motivation for the last tournaments of the season: this is a course he really loves, considering that he has finished 7 times in the top-10 in his 13 starts, moreover he can take advantage of a very good shape now, because he has finished out of the top-10 in just 1 of the last 5 events, also collecting 2 2nd places since the end of August. Without Mickelson and Stricker, there should be more chances for Langer to finally collect the 1st win of 2021, so he is my choice for this week.
