Golf Tips - 'Player of The Week' 2021 (W/B 13th September)

Postby PompeyJim » Mon Sep 13, 2021 3:52 pm

Welcome to Week 37 of Player of the Week 2021, hope everyone are keeping safe and well.

There are eight tournaments this week featuring the PGA Tour's Fortinet Championship.

If you have not played in previous weeks then please feel free to come and have a go, below are the competition rules and scoring.

Player of the Week 2021:

In addition to a weekly selection we are asking members to nominate a golfer to follow for the year, once you have submitted your golfer to follow for the year ahead you do not need to post he/she every time you enter a weekly pick.

We will confirm each week with the weekly selections if your golfer to follow for the year is active.

The golfer to follow for the year can be from any of the recognised tours and a selection will be required when members post their first weekly entry for 2021. This selection will earn points every time they win or finish runner up in a tournament, in addition to any potential points from the weekly selection.

*Your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' selection can also be a weekly pick at any time you wish throughout the season, scoring will be the usual weekly points criteria plus 100 points if he/she wins the tournament or 50 points for finishing runner up.

The competition scoring is detailed below.

A key factor in the feedback from OLBG golf fans following ‘Player of the Week’ is the analysis which accompanies a member's selection so we require at least 50 WORDS explaining why you think your golfer is a good bet, this is just a few lines and extremely useful for readers looking to follow your selection.

- For your first entry of 2021 we require your 'Golfer to Follow' for the year AND your selection for that week.
- After a 'Golfer to Follow' has been submitted it will then be ONE selection per week, with at least 50 words explaining your pick.
- The same golfer CAN be selected even if he/she has already been picked by another member.
- If your player withdraws BEFORE the tournament starts you can select a new pick as long as it is received before the cut off for entries.
- Deadline for entries each week will be the first tee off time of the tournament your player is competing.

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- 2nd = 50 points
- 3rd = 25 points
- 4th = 20 points
- 5th = 15 points
- 6th to 10th = 10 points

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- Tournament Runner Up = 50 points

* No other additional points (top 5, top 10, odds, leader, cut, etc) will be awarded for this pick.

- Below 10/1 = No bonus points
- 10/1 to 19/1 = (WIN) 5 points, (Top 5) 0 points
- 20/1 to 29/1 = (WIN) 10 points, (Top 5) 5 points
- 30/1 to 39/1 = (WIN) 20 points, (Top 5) 10 points
- 40/1 to 49/1 = (WIN) 30 points, (Top 5) 15 points
- 50/1 to 99/1 = (WIN) 40 points, (Top 5) 20 points
- 100/1 plus = (WIN) 50 points, (Top 5) 25 points

- **54 hole leader = 9 points
- First Round Leader = 7 points
- Made The Cut = 5 points

**Includes 36 hole leader for three round events like on the Champions Tour.

Dead Heat rules do not apply where there are place ties for point scoring, full points will be awarded.

All points will be doubled (including for Golfer of the Year picks) for the 4 majors (US Masters, The US Open, The Open Championship and the USPGA Championship)

Ryder Cup

There will be a Ryder Cup Competition with a separate prize and points will count in the Weekly Competition. The Ryder Cup is scheduled for 24th to 26th September 2021.

£15 to the Winner, this will be the member with the highest points total at the end of the year/final tournament week.
£5 to the Runner up.

- ANA OPEN (Japan Tour) Entry deadline 1 am Thursday
- DUTCH OPEN (European Tour) Entry deadline 7 am Thursday
- LADIES OPEN de FRANCE (Ladies European Tour) Entry deadline 7 am Thursday

Please add your pick using the template style below so your selection and tournament is clear for readers looking to follow your pick. Please also include your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' with your first entry (you don't need to include this pick every week).

Please feel free to ask any questions and it will be great to see as many members as possible post a selection each week and a golfer to follow for the year.

Also you can join in at any time, don’t worry if you miss a week or did not post the first week etc..

Good luck!

PLAYER: Will Zalatoris

Jon Rahm is the class act here and could win this moderate event without playing at his best but I am going with Will Zalatoris 28/1 who has yet to win on this tour but did produce some good performances last season including a 2nd at the Masters and a jt 8th at the PGA Championship. He was jt 8th in the World Golf Championships last month so he has recent good form. He is from California where this event takes place and he is a long hitter who should do well on the four par 5's here ( ranked 11th in the par 5 scoring average last season ). He will need to putt better than usual and if he does then I think he has a decent chance.

Player : Jon Rahm 9-2 Betfair

Event : Fortinet Championship

Reason for Support : I am siding with Rambo who lost out in the Fed-ex to a inspired Patrick Cantley but if you add up the scoring for just the Tour Championship him and Kevin Na where the top scorers. Rahm has been in the top nine in the last five events so is very reliable and he wants to win every tournament. the number one player in the world can win this as a nice sweetner for the Ryder cup to come. gl all.

Player - Joost Luiten 25/1

Tournament - Dutch Open

Reasons for Support -

The Dutchman was tied 35th last week in the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Golf Club and before that posted back to back Top 20 finishes at the Italian Open in Rome and the D&D Real Czech Masters over in Prague. He was tied 10th in 2019 and he has won his National Dutch Open twice in both 2013 and 2016, he has also finished second and posted other top ten finishes, I am tipping Joost Luiten gets the home support and plays really well this week in the Netherlands.

Player - Charley Hoffman (45/1)

Tournament - Fortinet Championship

Reasons for Support -

Only one cut missed in the last sixteen starts for the American and he tends to produce his best on courses where he can get hot with the putter. Second in the Valero Texas Open, tied third at the Charles Schwab Challenge, Hoffman played wuite well in The Northern Trust and BMW Championship without setting the courses on fire and I fancy his recent solid play takes shape this week at Silverado. The four time PGA Tour winner is available at 45/1 with both bet365 and William Hill.

Player - Mito Pereira (70/1)

Tournament - Fortinet Championship

Reasons For Support -

The Chilean won twice in June on the Korn Ferry Tour and with the automatic upgrade to the PGA Tour he started life with the big boys finishing tied 5th at the Barbasol Championship and then tied 6th at the 3M Open. Tied 4th at The Olympics to just miss out on the podium finish and a medal position in Tokyo, Mito Pereira has won three times since last February and I am backing he goes low with plenty of birdies this week in California and he is available at odds of 70/1 with Unibet.

PLAYER: Emily Pedersen 6/1

TOURNAMENT: Open de France (LET)

Well, I'm not going to make the mistake I did last week and overthink this. Emily has been very competitive on the LPGA lately and coming off a great performance at Solheim, very significant for her as her poor Solheim performance in 2017, when she was a teen, destroyed her confidence for a long time after. She's on top of the world and on top of her game right now. Don't think she'd bother to play if fatigue was an issue. Good luck all!

PLAYER: Steve Stricker @5.50

TOURNAMENT: Sanford International (Champions Tour)

REASON: Champions Tour is always my favourite one to tip on, because not many players can win in every tournament and players like Furyk, Stricker and Langer usually finish every event at least in the top-10. Stricker will be the USA Captain at the Ryder Cup at the end of next week and this will certainly put a lot of pressure on him, however I think he will play this tournament not to hink too much about that event and concentrate on his golf. He has already won twice on this Tour in 2021, including the Senior Players Championship, so I think he will fight for the top places in thsi event too.
