Golf Tips - 'Player of The Week' 2021 (W/B 16th August)

Postby PompeyJim » Mon Aug 16, 2021 3:50 pm

Welcome to Week 33 of Player of the Week 2021, hope everyone are keeping safe and well.

Kevin Kisner @ 55/1 won the Wyndham Championship for dwainec last week!

There are six tournaments this week featuring the PGA Tour's Northern Trust.

If you have not played in previous weeks then please feel free to come and have a go, below are the competition rules and scoring.

Player of the Week 2021:

In addition to a weekly selection we are asking members to nominate a golfer to follow for the year, once you have submitted your golfer to follow for the year ahead you do not need to post he/she every time you enter a weekly pick.

We will confirm each week with the weekly selections if your golfer to follow for the year is active.

The golfer to follow for the year can be from any of the recognised tours and a selection will be required when members post their first weekly entry for 2021. This selection will earn points every time they win or finish runner up in a tournament, in addition to any potential points from the weekly selection.

*Your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' selection can also be a weekly pick at any time you wish throughout the season, scoring will be the usual weekly points criteria plus 100 points if he/she wins the tournament or 50 points for finishing runner up.

The competition scoring is detailed below.

A key factor in the feedback from OLBG golf fans following ‘Player of the Week’ is the analysis which accompanies a member's selection so we require at least 50 WORDS explaining why you think your golfer is a good bet, this is just a few lines and extremely useful for readers looking to follow your selection.

- For your first entry of 2021 we require your 'Golfer to Follow' for the year AND your selection for that week.
- After a 'Golfer to Follow' has been submitted it will then be ONE selection per week, with at least 50 words explaining your pick.
- The same golfer CAN be selected even if he/she has already been picked by another member.
- If your player withdraws BEFORE the tournament starts you can select a new pick as long as it is received before the cut off for entries.
- Deadline for entries each week will be the first tee off time of the tournament your player is competing.

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- 2nd = 50 points
- 3rd = 25 points
- 4th = 20 points
- 5th = 15 points
- 6th to 10th = 10 points

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- Tournament Runner Up = 50 points

* No other additional points (top 5, top 10, odds, leader, cut, etc) will be awarded for this pick.

- Below 10/1 = No bonus points
- 10/1 to 19/1 = (WIN) 5 points, (Top 5) 0 points
- 20/1 to 29/1 = (WIN) 10 points, (Top 5) 5 points
- 30/1 to 39/1 = (WIN) 20 points, (Top 5) 10 points
- 40/1 to 49/1 = (WIN) 30 points, (Top 5) 15 points
- 50/1 to 99/1 = (WIN) 40 points, (Top 5) 20 points
- 100/1 plus = (WIN) 50 points, (Top 5) 25 points

- **54 hole leader = 9 points
- First Round Leader = 7 points
- Made The Cut = 5 points

**Includes 36 hole leader for three round events like on the Champions Tour.

Dead Heat rules do not apply where there are place ties for point scoring, full points will be awarded.

All points will be doubled (including for Golfer of the Year picks) for the 4 majors (US Masters, The US Open, The Open Championship and the USPGA Championship)

There will be a separate Ryder Cup Competition which is scheduled for 24th to 26th September 2021.

£15 to the Winner, this will be the member with the highest points total at the end of the year/final tournament week.
£5 to the Runner up.

- SYDBANK ESBJERG CHALLENGE (Challenge Tour) Entry deadline 6.30 am Tuesday
- AIG WOMEN'S OPEN (LPGA Tour) Entry deadline 6 am Thursday
- D+D REAL CZECH MASTERS (European Tour) Entry deadline 7 am Thursday
- THE NORTHERN TRUST (PGA Tour) Entry deadline 2 pm Thursday
- ALBERTSONS BOISE OPEN (Korn Ferry Tour) Entry deadline 2 pm Thursday
- BOEING CLASSIC (Champions Tour) Entry deadline 2 pm Friday

Please add your pick using the template style below so your selection and tournament is clear for readers looking to follow your pick. Please also include your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' with your first entry (you don't need to include this pick every week).

Please feel free to ask any questions and it will be great to see as many members as possible post a selection each week and a golfer to follow for the year.

Also you can join in at any time, don’t worry if you miss a week or did not post the first week etc..

Good luck!

Player - Webb Simpson 35/1

Tournament - The Northern Trust

Reasons for Support -

Webb Simpson has improved over his last three starts and I am tipping he is ready to win again on the PGA Tour. Tied 19th in the 148th Open Championship at Royal St. George’s, 15th in the World Golf Championship FedEx St. Jude Invitational and then tied 7th last week in the Wyndham Championship, Webb is my tip this week and he was tied sixth last year in this event carding three great rounds of 64, 68 and 66 after an opening 70. My tip is the world number 19 challenges to win this first FedEx event in the playoff series.

PLAYER: Jordan Spieth

Jordan Spieth 16/1 has returned to form this season after struggling with his game for a while. He has not missed a cut since last January and won the Valero Texas Open in April. He has finished 2nd in two of his eight golf tournaments since then including the Open Championship last month and this week's course has a links style to it and he has shown that he can play very good golf on links courses ( has won the Open Championship ). He came jt 6th at this event in 2019 when this week's course was used so he has some good course form.

Player - Rory McIlroy 22/1

Tournament - The Northern Trust

Reasons for Support -

The Northern Irishman normally clicks into gear around this time of the year with the FedEx Cup Play-Off Series and Ryder Cup looming. McIlroy won the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow in May and over the last month has looked like his game isn’t too far away from a big week. 7th in the U.S. Open, 4th at The Olympics and 12th at the WGC FedEx St. Jude Invitational, the world number 15 was tied 6th in last seasons Northern Trust and Liberty National is a course where he can open his shoulders. A strong week in New Jersey puts McIlroy into the mix for the FedEx Cup and I fancy he isn’t too far away come the back nine on Sunday.

Player - Patrick Cantlay 33/1

Tournament - The Northern Trust

Reasons for support -

The American won the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village and has since been 15th in the U.S Open and 13th in the Travelers Championship. Eight top 20 finishes this year on the PGA Tour, Cantlay was tied 8th in The Northern Trust a few years back and I am backing the world number nine puts himself into contention to have everything change come East Lake and that starts this week at Liberty National.

PLAYER: Patty Tavatanakit (40/1 on Unibet)

TOURNAMENT: AIG Women's British Open

Patty T hadn't been making quite as many waves since her ANA win, but has been solid. One of the best short game players on tour coming off the Scottish Open Solid ball striker, hasn't played a lot of links but has been training for it and her play stylt should be perfect for Carnoustie. Good luck all!

(Next year, I really have to take into consideration how often my yearly pick actually plays..)

Player : Jerry Kelly 10-1 Skybet

Event : Boeing Classic

Reason for Support : Jerry who is one of the favourite's has a very good chance this week he has been in the top ten in eight of the last nine events he has played and is top of the rankings for the Champion Tour this year. As well he has played good in this event he won in 2017 and was 3rd in 2019and 6th on 2016 so he seems to be coming into this on a upward curve. gl all

PLAYER: Jim Furyk @8 (bet365)

TOURNAMENT: Boeing Classic (Champions Tour)

REASON FOR SUPPORT: No player has been as consistent as Jim Furyk on the Champions Tour during this season: he has won the US Open Senior a few weeks ago and it was his first win of the year, however he had never finished out of the top-20 in the previous 9 events played in 2021, also collecting 3 top-6 finishes in a row last June. Without Steve Stricker, there seem to be not many dangerous players for Furyk in this event and I think he could collect the 2nd win of his season.
