Golf Tips - 'Player of The Week' 2021 (W/B 22nd November)

Postby PompeyJim » Mon Nov 22, 2021 3:23 pm

Welcome to Week 47 of Player of the Week 2021, hope everyone are keeping safe and well.

Caliace doubled up last week with yearly pick Jin-Young Ko (5/1) winning the CME Group Tour Championship.

There are four tournaments this week featuring the European Tour's Joburg Open, just to note the final round of the Player of the Week 2021 competition will be the week starting 6th December.

Image

If you have not played in previous weeks then please feel free to come and have a go, below are the competition rules and scoring.

Player of the Week 2021:

In addition to a weekly selection we are asking members to nominate a golfer to follow for the year, once you have submitted your golfer to follow for the year ahead you do not need to post he/she every time you enter a weekly pick.

We will confirm each week with the weekly selections if your golfer to follow for the year is active.

The golfer to follow for the year can be from any of the recognised tours and a selection will be required when members post their first weekly entry for 2021. This selection will earn points every time they win or finish runner up in a tournament, in addition to any potential points from the weekly selection.

*Your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' selection can also be a weekly pick at any time you wish throughout the season, scoring will be the usual weekly points criteria plus 100 points if he/she wins the tournament or 50 points for finishing runner up.

The competition scoring is detailed below.

A key factor in the feedback from OLBG golf fans following ‘Player of the Week’ is the analysis which accompanies a member's selection so we require at least 50 WORDS explaining why you think your golfer is a good bet, this is just a few lines and extremely useful for readers looking to follow your selection.

CRITERIA

- For your first entry of 2021 we require your 'Golfer to Follow' for the year AND your selection for that week.
- After a 'Golfer to Follow' has been submitted it will then be ONE selection per week, with at least 50 words explaining your pick.
- The same golfer CAN be selected even if he/she has already been picked by another member.
- If your player withdraws BEFORE the tournament starts you can select a new pick as long as it is received before the cut off for entries.
- Deadline for entries each week will be the first tee off time of the tournament your player is competing.

PLAYER: Wilco Nienaber

TOURNAMENT: JOBURG OPEN (European Tour)

REASON FOR SUPPORT:

Wilco Nienaber 25/1 does lack experience and is not a consistent golfer but this is a moderate event and takes place in his native country of South Africa and he won the Dimension Data Pro-Am earlier this year which was in South Africa. This course is quite long and he is a long hitter off the tee and the course is not usually a difficult one to play on and he showed that he could do well here as he came 2nd at this event in 2020 so he has good course form. Finished jt 8th in his latest event so has recent good form.

Player - Darren Fichardt (66/1)

Tournament - Joburg Open

Reasons for Support -

The South African won this title back in 2017 and whenever the European Tour goes to South African the veteran journeyman tends to feature giving his course knowledge and Sunshine Tour experience. Tied 11th twelve months ago here with four rounds in the 60’s, I am backing Darren Fichardt puts another four good days together in the Joburg Open and with bet365 offering a standout price of 66/1, he looks a great each way bet in this part of the world and at this time of year in South Africa.

Player - Bryce Easton (70/1)

Tournament - Joburg Open

Reasons for Support -

Twelve months ago in last years Joburg Open the South African golfer finished tied seventh and seven shots behind the winner Joachim B Hansen. He carded four rounds in the sixties opening with two 69’s and closing with two 67’s. His last appearance on the European Tour was over in Mallorca and he finished tied seventh there and with four cuts in a row made and multiple good finishes when the European Tour comes to South Africa late in the year, I am tipping Bryce Easton has a good week at the Joburg Open where he is best priced 70/1 with one or two bookmakers.

Player : Marcus Helligkilde 40-1 bet365

Event : Joburg Open

Reason for Support : I am going with Marcus in this, he has just won The Challenge Tour Grand Final and in so doing won the Challenge Tour and has had three weeks to recover. You have to hit the ground running these days no time to pause and he could surprise some better known names. The South Africans are very strong in there own country with Dean Burmester just one to speak of, it should be a fun week, let the games begin. Gl all.

Player - Shaun Norris (33/1)

Tournament - Joburg Open

Reasons for Support -

Shaun Norris opened with a 63 twelve months ago in the Joburg Open and a closing 66 seen him finish third behind Joachim B. Hansen and Wilco Nienaber. Three straight top 25 finishes in Japan before heading home for this event, he won last months Japan Open Golf Championship and I fancy the South African has a big week at Randpark. bet365 and William Hill are the market leaders offering 33/1 for a home win and that looks a price worth taking in Johannesburg.

PLAYER: Atthaya Thitikul 16/5

TOURNAMENT: Open de Espana (LET)

REASON FOR SUPPORT:

Well, now that Jin Young Ko is done being amazing for the season, I'm looking to Thitikul to take her corresponding championship in similar fashion. Ciganda, at home in Spain, could get in her way but Ciganda is not nearly consistent enough to take at such low odds. You'd be lucky to break even on the EW with ties. I'd rather invest in Thitikul for the win.

PLAYER: Takumi Kanaya @8.50 (bet365)

TOURNAMENT: Casio World Open (Japan Tour)

REASON FOR SUPPORT: Not many players can win this tournament in my opinion and Kanaya is certainly among them: he is the best ranked player among the ones who will play here and considering that he has collected 5 top-10 finishes in a row, including a 2nd place at Taiheiyo Masters, his shape seems to be good enough to win this event. His 31st place at Dunlop Phoenix has been quiet strange, but I think he can avenge that bad performance with a very good one here.
