Golf Tips - 'Player of The Week' 2021 (W/B 18th October)

Postby PompeyJim » Mon Oct 18, 2021 3:30 pm

Welcome to Week 42 of Player of the Week 2021, hope everyone are keeping safe and well.

There are six tournaments this week featuring the PGA Tour's ZOZO Championship.

If you have not played in previous weeks then please feel free to come and have a go, below are the competition rules and scoring.

Player of the Week 2021:

In addition to a weekly selection we are asking members to nominate a golfer to follow for the year, once you have submitted your golfer to follow for the year ahead you do not need to post he/she every time you enter a weekly pick.

We will confirm each week with the weekly selections if your golfer to follow for the year is active.

The golfer to follow for the year can be from any of the recognised tours and a selection will be required when members post their first weekly entry for 2021. This selection will earn points every time they win or finish runner up in a tournament, in addition to any potential points from the weekly selection.

*Your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' selection can also be a weekly pick at any time you wish throughout the season, scoring will be the usual weekly points criteria plus 100 points if he/she wins the tournament or 50 points for finishing runner up.

The competition scoring is detailed below.

A key factor in the feedback from OLBG golf fans following ‘Player of the Week’ is the analysis which accompanies a member's selection so we require at least 50 WORDS explaining why you think your golfer is a good bet, this is just a few lines and extremely useful for readers looking to follow your selection.

- For your first entry of 2021 we require your 'Golfer to Follow' for the year AND your selection for that week.
- After a 'Golfer to Follow' has been submitted it will then be ONE selection per week, with at least 50 words explaining your pick.
- The same golfer CAN be selected even if he/she has already been picked by another member.
- If your player withdraws BEFORE the tournament starts you can select a new pick as long as it is received before the cut off for entries.
- Deadline for entries each week will be the first tee off time of the tournament your player is competing.

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- 2nd = 50 points
- 3rd = 25 points
- 4th = 20 points
- 5th = 15 points
- 6th to 10th = 10 points

- Tournament Winner = 100 points
- Tournament Runner Up = 50 points

* No other additional points (top 5, top 10, odds, leader, cut, etc) will be awarded for this pick.

- Below 10/1 = No bonus points
- 10/1 to 19/1 = (WIN) 5 points, (Top 5) 0 points
- 20/1 to 29/1 = (WIN) 10 points, (Top 5) 5 points
- 30/1 to 39/1 = (WIN) 20 points, (Top 5) 10 points
- 40/1 to 49/1 = (WIN) 30 points, (Top 5) 15 points
- 50/1 to 99/1 = (WIN) 40 points, (Top 5) 20 points
- 100/1 plus = (WIN) 50 points, (Top 5) 25 points

- **54 hole leader = 9 points
- First Round Leader = 7 points
- Made The Cut = 5 points

**Includes 36 hole leader for three round events like on the Champions Tour.

Dead Heat rules do not apply where there are place ties for point scoring, full points will be awarded.

All points will be doubled (including for Golfer of the Year picks) for the 4 majors (US Masters, The US Open, The Open Championship and the USPGA Championship)

Ryder Cup

There will be a Ryder Cup Competition with a separate prize and points will count in the Weekly Competition. The Ryder Cup is scheduled for 24th to 26th September 2021.

£15 to the Winner, this will be the member with the highest points total at the end of the year/final tournament week.
£5 to the Runner up.

- CHALLENGE COSTA BRAVA (Challenge Tour) Entry deadline 7 am Tuesday
- ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP (PGA Tour) Entry deadline 1 am Thursday
- BMW LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP (LPGA Tour) Entry deadline 1 am Thursday
- MALLORCA GOLF OPEN (European Tour) Entry deadline 7 am Thursday
- BLAIR ATHOLL CHAMPIONSHIP (Sunshine Tour) Entry deadline 7 am Thursday
- DOMINION ENERGY CHARITY CLASSIC (Champions Tour) Entry deadline 2 pm Friday

Please add your pick using the template style below so your selection and tournament is clear for readers looking to follow your pick. Please also include your 'Golfer to Follow for the Year' with your first entry (you don't need to include this pick every week).

Please feel free to ask any questions and it will be great to see as many members as possible post a selection each week and a golfer to follow for the year.

Also you can join in at any time, don’t worry if you miss a week or did not post the first week etc..

Good luck!

PLAYER: Collin Morikawa

Odds of 15/2 are not that good but only 78 players are competing in this event which is not a strong one and Collin Morikawa could outclass his opponents here in Japan. He is ranked at number 3 in the world and has won twice this year with his latest victory bring in the Open Championship which is a Major. He won another Major last year with a victory in the PGA Championship. He performed well last week when runner up and this week's short par 70 course of about 7000 yards is one that he should like. He can play accurately from tee to green and the greens here are not difficult ones to putt on. He played well in the Olympics this year in Japan and nearly won a bronze medal but came jt 4th.

Player - John Catlin 25/1

Tournament - Mallorca Golf Open

Reasons for Support -

The American golfer was tied 11th last week and he finished really well with a beautiful 67 which was one of the best rounds on Sunday at the Estrella Damm Andalucia Valderamma Masters. He was fifth earlier this season in Tenerife after winning the Austrian Golf Open and I am tipping John Catlin is a serious contender this week in the first ever Mallorca Golf Open. He is a multiple winner on the European Tour now and in a field like this, my tip is he has a chance to win come the closing holes on Sunday afternoon.

Player - Matthias Schmid (40/1)

Tournament - Mallorca Golf Open

Reasons for Support -

Second in the Dutch Open with four rounds in the 60’s which included a 65-66 weekend to finish three shots behind Kristoffer Broberg, the German was then tied 9th at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Three top ten finishes in his last four starts, I am backing Matthias Schmid challenges this week in Mallorca where I fancy him to go low. The 23 year old is best priced this week with bet365 and Unibet offering 40/1 and he is one to watch this week in the Balearic Islands.

Player - Sebastian Munoz (90/1)

Tournament - Zozo Championship

Reasons for Support -

Tied 4th at The Olympic Games golf tournament and a return to Japan this week has Sebastian Munoz as a sleeper pick for me at the Zozo Championship. Five top 10 finishes over the last twelve months, the 28 year old has put together some good performances outside of the United States on the PGA Tour and I fancy the Colombian puts a good week together at the Accordia Golf Narashino Country Club. Betfred and Unibet are the best industry prices with both firms offering 90/1 on Sebastian Munoz.

Player : Collin Morikawa 15-2 bet365

Event : ZOZO Championship

Reason for Support : One of the Favourite's and rightly so after his performance last week at the CJ Cup. He was trailing most of the way but shot a 10 under to end up in second place. The open winner we know now is tuned in and he just has to play the same way to take this tournament in his stride. gl all.

PLAYER: Ha Na Jang (50/1)

TOURNAMENT: BMW Ladies Championship

Strategy-wise it might be smarter to double up on my yearly Jin Young Ko, but Ha Na is a much better tip considering the odds and that is the spirit of this competition. Anyway, Ha Na won this event last time in 2019 and has been a consistent top 5 finisher on the KLPGA since then. She did WD from her last event with a knee. Issue, but she's since said that it's fine. This is an important event for the KLPGA players to prove themselves against LPGA. The KLPGA is very competitive and players generally undervalued. Other Koreans in good form to consider include: Min Ji Park, Hye Jin Choi, Hyun Kyung Park and Rin An Na.

PLAYER: Phil Mickelson @3.20 (bet365)

REASON FOR SUPPORT: It is really impossible not to choose Mickelson in all events he plays on the Champions Tour: he has won 3 out of 4 tournament on this Tour so far and he also comes from a very clear win at the Constellation Furyk & Friends where he has taken the lead after the first round and keep it till the end. His main opponent on the Champions Tour, Steve Stricker, won't play here and considering that Mickelson has won this event one year ago with 3 rounds in 68 shots or less, another win seems to be very likely for him.
