In the last 8 years since 2010 there have been 61 handicaps during the Royal Ascot meeting. Of those 61 races 12 favourites have won. That is a strike rate of just under 20%.

The average starting price of each winner of a handicap is as follows.
Average Starting Prices
Royal Hunt Cup 20
Wokingham 14.4
Britannia 13.3
Duke Of Edinburgh 10.7
Wolferton 9.9
King George V Stakes 9.6
Sandringham 8.7
Ascot Stakes 8.25

You can see that the Royal Hunt Cup throws up the biggest priced winners, and the Ascot Stakes the shortest priced winners. If looking for an easier handicap to find a winning bet, then those Royal Ascot races with averages under 10/1 should be focused on.

Below is the last 8 years of handicap favourites who won. You can see that 2011 and 2013 were poor years for favourite backers.

Royal Ascot Pointers

Betting School ImageThe shortest priced winner of a handicap in the last 8 years was Rainbow Peak in 2010 who was sent off at 13/8 in the Wolferton.

The Wolferton as a race also had the second shortest priced runner in 2015 when the John Gosden trained Mashoob won in 2015.

There have only been 1 horse that won the Ascot Stakes returned above 10/1.

There has only been 1 winner less than 10/1 for the Royal Hunt Cup.

Belgium Bill in the Royal Hunt Cup of 2013 and Dandy Boy in the Wokingham of 2012 were the biggest starting prices of the current handicaps, both horses were returned at 33/1.

As a very rough guide you should spend time looking at the head of the market in the Ascot Stakes.

Look for horses below 11/1 in the King George, Sandringham and Wolferton. Look for horses between 12/1 and 18/1 in the Brittania and Wokingham, and in the Royal Hunt Cup look for bigger outsiders to run well.

All the handicap favourites that won were below 6/1.

John Gosden has had 4 favourites win handicaps in the last 8 years. His runners should always be noted.

Look to the top jockeys riding favourites in handicaps, the 12 handicap favourite winners in the last 8 years were ridden by Ryan Moore (4), Paul Hanagan (2), William Buick (2), Frankie Dettori (1), Johnny Murtagh (1), Neil Callan (1), WM Lordan(1).

To reiterate my other Royal Ascot blog, look closely at these trainers horses in handicaps, if they fall into the above price guides then even better.
