Week 1 - Read It Here!

There were some superb performances last week, but some struggled with the technicalities of the dances while nerves got the better of others. Onto this week!

THIS IS A NO SPOILER BLOG AND THE ELIMINATION RESULTS WILL ONLY BE UPDATED ONCE ANNOUNCED IN THE RESULTS SHOW

2017 Celebrities

  • Mollie King

  • Second Dance -Tango to Addicted To Love by Tina Turner
Mollie's far too sweet for this really. She did have the character, but she lost her frame too often. There was some intensity, but she just isn't suited to this dance and you could see it. No problems this week though, they should easily go through, but they will have to improve as there are some good celebrities this year!

  • Davood Ghadami

  • Second Dance - Quickstep to Last Nite by The Strokes
Not traditional enough really and Nadiya's choreography was criticised. It was quick, energetic and they really covered the floor. No glamour or elegance, but it was good to watch, you can't take that away from them. Davood can dance and Nadiya has to let him do it more. Plenty of points and support to keep them in though!

  • Ruth Langsford

  • Second Dance - Charleston to The Charleston by Bob Wilson and his Varsity Rhythm Boys
They had to contend with an injury which hampered their training and the routine was quite basic, so I'm not sure whether it had to be changed because of it. There was swivel and Ruth didn't look as nervous as last week. It all looked to go as well as it could have done and I would expect them to get the public support to stay in!

  • Gemma Atkinson

  • Second Dance - Waltz to Un Giorno Per Noi (A Time For Us) by Josh Groban
Everything was elegant and graceful as they covered the floor with ease. It looked really sweet and the technique was all there. Gemma's gone up in my estimations this week with that performance, let's hope she can carry it forward to next week. The girl done good!

  • Rev. Richard Coles

  • Second Dance - American Smooth to Love Really Hurts Without You by Billy Ocean
The dance was without the spectacular lifts, but as with last week, the Reverend really threw himself into it. There wasn't much smooth in there either, but his musicality does come through. He's entertaining, but will that be enough as they are bottom of the leader board?

  • Joe McFadden

  • Second Dance - Tango to Castle On The Hill by Ed Sheeran
I was a bit disappointed with this one after their performance last week, I expected more. Joe's frame was poor and he lacked the technique. There was also a mistake in there, but Katya has plenty to work with here. She can get the best out of him here as she did last year with the less able Ed!

  • Simon Rimmer

  • Second Dance - Waltz to You'll Never Walk Alone by Rodgers and Hammerstein
After struggling last week, Simon came out this week with a much better performance. In Karen's arms he looked much more comfortable. There was a huge mistake with the ending, but the technique was so much better. Does he have the fan base to keep him in?

  • Aston Merrygold

  • Second Dance - Salsa to Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee ft. Justin Bieber
Party at theirs and I thought that this was going to be the dance of the night. There were tricks and more tricks, though he did nearly drop her. My heart was in my mouth at that point. The dance suited his personality and there were so many risky moves. I couldn't take my eyes off them!

  • Susan Calman

  • Second Dance - Charleston to If You Knew Susie by Enoch Light and The Charleston City All-Stars
This dance suited Susan and she gave it everything. There was plenty of characterisation, comedy and energy. There were a few timing issues, but she kept the intensity all the way through. Pure entertainment despite there being no swivel!

  • Brian Conley

  • Second Dance - Cha Cha to Shake Your Groove Thing by Peaches and Herb
Brian really struggled last week and although this dance suited his personality better, technically he hasn't improved. He lost the timing and it was more disco than Cha Cha. It had the crowd on their feet though as it was entertaining, but have they done enough?

  • Charlotte Hawkins

  • Second Dance - Cha Cha to Sugar by Maroon 5
The footwork was poor and there were so many mistakes, I lost count. She looked to struggle with the whole routine. I felt so sorry for her and Brendon's choreography took a beating. Nerves really ruined the whole thing for her. Can she recover from this?

  • Chizzy Akudolu

  • Second Dance - Foxtrot to I'm A Woman from ‘Smokey Joe's Café'
Chizzy gave it her all, but the routine fell a little flat. I felt that Pasha pitched it wrong and there should have been grace and flow to the dance. Chizzy has to reel in her personality in some dances and this should have been one of them. This wasn't her dance tonight. Have they got the support to keep them in?

  • Debbie McGee

  • Second Dance - Viennese Waltz to She's Always A Woman by Billy Joel
A very different dance this week after an impressive performance in week 1. Debbie was graceful and elegant and proved that last week wasn't a flash in the pan. These two are in for a long time as they topped the leader board once both scores had been added together!

  • Jonnie Peacock

  • Second Dance - Jive to Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry
This must have been hard technically with his disability. Jonnie still got the bounce, kicks and flicks though. The crowd were on their feet after a fast and technical routine. Not perfect, but energetic and good all the same. No problems for them this week!

  • Alexandra Burke

  • Second Dance - Paso Doble to 'Ven a Bailar by Jennifer Lopez
Wow! Alexandra is such a total performer, I'm not sure there's a dance she won't be able to do, even at this early stage. There was intensity and I loved the changes in tempo. She was excellent in isolation and they closed the show with such a bang that both the audience and Judges were on their feet. One question though, it was that good, where were the Tens? I don't care that it's only week 2. Definitely dance of the night!

The Dance Off

And so we have the first Dance Off of the series and what a shocker it was!

Chizzy ended up in the bottom two with Brian. Chizzy was 12's and Brian 3.25 with Paddy Power to go this week. I think Brian was always going to dance again, but Chizzy was unexpected.

They had to perform their second dances again which meant a Foxtrot for Chizzy and Cha Cha for Brian (I think Chizzy would have been much happier also doing the Cha Cha!). First performance scores put Brian ahead with 19 points to Chizzy's 16.
Second time around Chizzy danced first, but 3 points was a lot to make up. The Judges weren't unanimous, so it was up to new Head Judge Shirley. I can't say that Brian is the better dancer, but on the night and for the dances they performed, the right decision was made. An emotional Chizzy went home and Brian stayed to dance another week, much to the despair of social media.

Once again the middle of the leader board strikes again!

NEXT WEEKS ELIMINATION
Brian and Charlotte have to put this week behind them and hope for better performances next week. Simon won't have an iconic song to help him next week and the Reverend and Susan will need to improve their technique. Ruth should be ok again with her public support, but needs to get a hold of her nerves. I'm not sure where Chizzy's votes will go, but I think Brian will be in trouble again next week.

Current Betting

Aston Merrygold 3.25
Alexandra Burke 4.5
Debbie McGee 7.5
Mollie King 7.5
Davood Ghadami 11
Gemma Atkinson 11
Joe McFadden 11
Jonnie Peacock 11
Charlotte Hawkins 41
Chizzy Akudolu 67
Richard Coles 67
Susan Calman 81
Brian Conley 101
Ruth Langsford 101
Simon Rimmer 101

(With Paddy Power)
Debbie's price has blown the betting wide open after impressive performances, while Ruth has gone in the opposite direction.

THOUGHTS AND BETS

There were a few who had it all to do this week and while some improved, others have left themselves firmly at the mercy of the public. With 15 couples and only so many votes to go around, it will be interesting to see who will end up in the bottom two.

My three votes went to Susan, Rev. Richard and Jonnie. Not the best dancers, but at this stage, I want these three to stay in more than others!

THIS WEEKS ELIMINATION THOUGHTS

The first week is always difficult to judge as to who will have the public support, but I do think that even with indifferent performances, Rev. Richard, Susan and Ruth will be safe. Fair to say that Charlotte had a mare, but I think she will be safe also. It's Brian and Simon in trouble for me!

NEXT WEEKS ELIMINATION THOUGHTS

Charlotte will have to improve after her disastrous week and that Brian/Simon if they stay in will also be in trouble. Chizzy also needs to improve otherwise she could go the same way as Tameka last series!
