Plenty of the fancied runners have progressed from Saturday’s first round heats to book their place in next weekend’s Semi Finals. The pre competition favourite Holdem Spy was an impressive six lengths winner in the opening heat , posting a respectable 29.40 sec in the process. He missed the break as he often can but showed blinding back straight pace and those that supported him in to 1/2 never had a moments worry. Lagganmore Milan and Strategic Review chased him home to qualify. Strategic Review may well have finished a little closer but for running wide and being crowded early on, but was beaten fairly by a better dog:
Greenwell Lark posted the fastest time of the qualifiers when taking heat two. The daughter of Daves Mentor was quickly away and was never headed, coming home a shade over two lengths in front of Lemon Pumba with Toolatetosell a further head back in third spot. The bitch was quickly promoted to favourite by most bookmakers and is now no better than a 9/2 chance, just slightly shorter that the heat one winner Holdem Spy. A repeat performance at the weekend should see Greenwell Lark progress to the final.
Calzaghe Jack probably provided the biggest surprise of the evening when taking heat three at the rewarding odds of 5/1, he came home a length and three quarters in front of the well fancied Exocet , who suffered from crowding at the first bend. In a cleaner run race I feel that Exocet may have proven the better dog. In third place and my ante post EW fancy before the competition got under way was Tarbrook Taetoe, he was staying on well late on after missing the kick at trap rise, if he can break a little better in the semis then I wouldn’t rule him out of qualifying for the decider:
Greyhounds Jaytee Lightning posted a swift 29.24sec when taking heat four in good style. The son of Duke Special was never headed and came home just under two lengths clear of the Westmead Hawk dog Mind The Net. The latter suffered from crowding early on but ran on well to record a very respectable 29.38sec and would surely have given Lightning a close run in a cleaner run race. He still commands plenty of respect and supporters can be pleased with that effort. Holdem Tight chased them home in third but was well beaten and will be doing very well if making the last six.
Farloe Nutter took heat five in 29.28sec , two and a half lengths in front of Greenwell Mentor with a further four back to Cashen Maureen. Nutter only turns two years old this month and must still be open to more improvement, he looks to have a good future ahead of him, regardless of what he achieves in this competition. That said he holds good claims to make the final. Greenwell Mentor and Cashen Maureen will be doing very well for their connections if progressing past the Semi Final stage:
Greyhounds Mileheight Alba made it five winning favourites from the six first round heats when taking the closing race. The son of Ballymac Maeve was quickly away and made all recording the slowest time of the six heat winners in 29.62sec, but did post the fastest split in 3.68sec indicating that he may well be a danger to all if repeating that lightning early kick. Otsider Spirit Sir Henry did well to run him to a length and a quarter with Metro Jack coming home in third place and booking his ticket for the semis. Metro Jack was probably a little unlucky not to finish closer after being slowly away and suffering some crowding , but will need to be on his toes if he wants to make it through at the weekend.
