With Serena Williams such a hot favourite for the Women's French Open I thought I'd take a look at which of her rivals stands the best chance of beating her at Roland Garros. Looking at the current outright winner odds I've researched Serena's record against the next ten in the betting and trust me it doesn't make pretty reading for her opponents.
ALL SURFACES - On all surfaces Serena Williams holds an astonishing record of Played 73, Won 62, Lost 11 against her nearest rivals. When you consider that's against the likes of Sharapova, Azarenka, Kvitova and others that's some statistic.
Complete Record
Williams 13 v Sharapova 2
Williams 12 v Azarenka 2
Williams 7 v Li Na 1
Williams 5 v Errani 0
Williams 6 v Stosur 3
Williams 4 v Kvitova 0
Williams 5 v Radwanska 0
Williams 2 v Kerber 1
Williams 4 v Ivanovic 0
Williams 4 v Kuznetsova 2
Maybe surprising to some is the fact that Samantha Stosur and Svetlana Kuznetsova have performed best against Serena. Sam Stosur beat Williams in the French Open quarter-finals of 2010 and again in the US Open Final of 2011, while Kuznetsova has not only beaten Serena twice, but also taken her to three sets on two of the occasions she lost.
Roland Garros French Open CLAY SURFACE ONLY - On clay surfaces Serena Williams holds a record of Played 14, Won 12, Lost 2 against the same ten rivals, which shows she's even more dominant against them on clay than other surfaces.
As we can see in the table below only Stosur and Kuznetsova, who we've mentioned above, have managed to defeat Serena so the task awaiting the others at Roland Garros looks huge to say the least.
Clay Record
Williams 3 v Sharapova 0
Williams 3 v Azarenka 0
Williams 0 v Li Na 0
Williams 2 v Errani 0
Williams 2 v Stosur 1
Williams 0 v Kvitova 0
Williams 1 v Radwanska 0
Williams 0 v Kerber 0
Williams 0 v Ivanovic 0
Williams 1 v Kuznetsova 1
Summary - With Serena Williams having won the last two tournaments she's contested on clay, beating Azarenka and Sharapova in straight sets in each final it will take a brave man to oppose her in the French Open.
If she is to meet with defeat then Samantha Stosur could well be the most likely to beat her as she has a decent record against Serena and maybe more importantly has beaten her on big occasions, not just in weekly tour events.
