The Ladies Professional Golf Association ( LPGA ) tour is becoming a global one with tournaments in Australia, Asia, Europe and North and South America and the 2013 tour will begin in Australia and end in the USA.
There are nearly 30 official tournaments on the tour and over half of them take place in the USA but an American has not managed to win the LPGA Money List since 1993 when Betsy King was successful. One possible reason for this is because they often find it difficult to win tournaments outside their own country. Also golf has become more popular in Asia and the latest four winners of the money list have all been from that continent.
If an American is going to win the money list in 2013 then it is very likely to be Stacy Lewis who finished 3rd on the money list this year and won four tournaments in 2012. She is improving with experience and is a consistent golfer and will win more tournaments especially if she can improve her accuracy.
World number One Yani Tseng dominated the LPGA tour in 2011 with seven victories including two in Majors and she finished well clear of her nearest rival to come top of the LPGA money list. However she disappointed in 2012 after a good start to the year and did suffer an injury which she is struggling to fully recover from.
The winner in 2012 was Inbee Park who won two tournaments and could have won more but she can struggle a bit with her fitness and sometimes failed to close out winning positions and I do not think she will perform quite as well in 2013.
My selection to win the 2013 LPGA money list is the South Korean Na Yeon Choi. She is a very consistent golfer who won the money list in 2010 and finished 3rd in 2011 and came runner up in 2012 even though she only won two tournaments. She prefers longer courses but is capable of playing good golf on any type of course and in any country. She won her first Major in 2012 when successful at the U S Open and finished the LPGA tour with another victory in the CME Group Titleholders. She is a player who thrives on confidence so those two victories should help her improve further and I think that she will make a serious challenge to win the 2013 money list.
Edit 16/01/2013
I have decided to recommend another player to win this following the release of the schedule for the LPGA tour this year as I consider that her chances have been underestimated -
So Yeon Ryu is from South Korea and has won at least eight tournaments in her native country. She is only 22 years old and has already won a Major as she came first after a play off in the U S Open in 2011. Last year was officially her rookie year on the LPGA tour and she played consistently with seventeen top 10 finishes including two victories and she was the LPGA rookie of the year for 2012. She has performed very well so far on the LPGA tour for a young player with only a couple of year's experience of it and I think that she is likely to improve further in 2013 and looks to have a decent chance of winning the LPGA Tour money list in 2013.
