I have been fortunate enough to get a placepot up a few times at the festival, and all i can do is give the following advice, this advice doesn't mean you will get the placepot up, but should help you in your search for placepot riches. When doing the placepot at Cheltenham, i might have 1 banker but normally i would have 2 races with 2 selections, 2 or 3 races with 3 selections in and 1 or 2 with 4 selections in.

Day 1

  • Race 1
  • The Supreme novices hurdle opens the meeting on day 1 and favourites/2nd favourites have a pretty good record in the race, with 7 x fav/Jt fav/Co fav being placed and 7 x 2nd fav also being placed.I would be picking 2 in this race, 2 short priced horses, probably fav and 2nd fav or 3rd fav.
  • Race 2
  • The Arkle Chase is usually a great race for favourites with 7 (6 outright and 2 x joints) of them getting placed in the last 10 years, also 4 x 2nd fav have also been placed.Again, i would probably pick the first 2 in the betting, judging on the history
  • Race 3
  • The first big handicap of the day and with almost always more than 15 runners, meaning 4 places for placepot punters, i would expect to have either 3 or 4 selections in this race, of the 40 horses placed in the last 10 years, 21 were returned at prices of 10/1 or shorter.8 of the other 19 placed horses were returned at prices of 25/1 or higher, the other 11 were priced between 11/1 & 16/1 If i was picking 3 in this race, i would probably go for 2 horses priced at 12/1 or shorter and 1 priced bigger than 12/1 but no bigger than around 20/1, 2 at those prices if selecting 4 in the race.
  • Race 4
  • The Champion hurdle is the biggest race of day 1 and i have used this race for a banker many times before by selecting the short priced favourite, 21 of the 30 horses placed in the last 10 years were returned at single figure prices.6 favourites have been placed in the last 10 years, including 2 at odds on and 2 at 6/4 & 13/8.With the favourite likely to be very short (4/9 at present), i might have 2 selections in this race
  • Race 5
  • The OLBG Mares hurdle is a race where favourites have a good record, 9 of the 10 favourites have finished in the first 3, 11 of the 30 horses placed have had SP's of 16/1 or biggerAt present the current favourite for the race is odds on (4/6) and depending on what else is in the race, i may have her as my banker of the day
  • Race 6
  • The last race of the first day's placepot is by far the toughest race to call, it's run over 4 miles for novice chasers and Amateur jockeys will be riding, also, it's not a handicap despite having loads of runners so only 3 places are available.Favourites have failed to finish in the first 3 in 7 of the last 10 runnings, although 17 of the last 30 placed horses were returned at Single figure prices.I will probably take 3 in this race, all priced roughly between about 7/1 & 12/1, at present the ante post favourite is priced between 5/2 & 8/1So my day 1 placepot will probably be 2 x 2 x 4 x 2 x 1 x 3 = 96 bets.

Day 2

  • Race 1
  • The Neptune Investment novices hurdle starts the placepot on day 2, it's run over 2 miles 5 furlongs, 9 of the last 10 favourites have been placed in the race and 16 of the other 21 placed horses had a single figure starting priceI will probably pick 2 in the race, both well fancied in the race
  • Race 2
  • The RSA Chase is race 2 and another novice chasers event, 5 favourites and a joint fav have been placed (for placepot purposes the joint fav was the wrong 1), including favourites, 18 of the last 30 placed horses had single figure prices.Only 4 horses priced at 20/1+ finished in the first 3, i will probably take 2 in this race, both in single figure prices
  • Race 3
  • The Champion Chase is the big race of day 2, and if the bookies are to be believed it looks like a 3 horse race, should those 3 run in the race of course.6 of the last 10 favourites have finished in the first 3, and it's a mixed bag regarding SP's, with 15 single figure priced horses and 15 double figure priced horses filling the 30 placesI will probably pick 2 in this race, and i would imagine they will be near the top of the betting
  • Race 4
  • The Coral Cup is an ultra competitive handicap hurdle which always attracts a huge field, this does mean we have 4 places for placepot playersFavourites don't have a good record in this race, with only 1 and 1 joint fav getting placed, including favourites, only 6 horses have placed with a single figure SP9 of the last 10 years have seen at least 1 of the placed horses have an SP of 25/1 or higher, 13 horses have placed at 25/1 or higherI will probably pick 3 in this race, all of those selections will probably be priced between 10/1 & 20/1
  • Race 5
  • The 5th race is the Glenfarclas Cross Country, which used to be a handicap, so we had 4 places, but it's no longer a handicap, so we only have 3 placesOnly 4 favourites have filled a place from the 30 placed in the last 10 years, 16 of the 30 placed horses had a single figure SPI will be picking 2 horses in this race, probably around the same price (6/1-14/1)
  • Race 6
  • The last race on day 2 for placepot punters is the Fred Winter Juvenile Novices handicap hurdle, which usually attracts a large field6 of the last 10 favourites have been placed in the race, Only 12 of 40 horses were placed with an SP of 10/1 or shorter15 of the 40 placed horses returned with an SP of 20/1 or higher and at least 1 was placed every yearI will probably pick 4 in this race, 2 at prices around 10/1-12/1 and another 2 at prices between 16/1 & 20/1So my day 2 placepot will probably be 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 2 x 3 = 144 bets

Day 3

  • Race 1
  • The JLT Novices chase opens up the 3rd day for placepot punters, the race is run over just short of 2 miles 4 furlongs, there have only been 7 runnings of the raceFavourites have placed in 5 of the 7 runnings and only 4 horses priced in double figures have placed from the 21 placed selectionsI will pick 2 selections in this race, both single figure prices
  • Race 2
  • The Pertemps Final is a handicap hurdle ran over 3 miles and attracts a big field, 1 fav and 1 jt fav have placed in the last 10 years, a very poor recordOnly 7 horses in single figures have placed from the 40 placed horses, 22 horses were priced between 10/1 & 20/1I will probably pick 3 selections in this race, all priced between 10/1 & 20/1
  • Race 3
  • The Ryanair Chase is the 3rd race for placepot punters on Thursday, it's run over 2 miles 5 furlongs, favourites have a good record in the race for placepot punters, with 8 of the last 10 being placed, 19 of the 30 placed horses had single figure SP'sI will pick 2 selections in this race, probably 2 well fancied horses
  • Race 4
  • The highlight of day 4 is the next race, The Sunbets Stayers Hurdle, ran over 3 miles, 8 of the last 10 favourites have placed in the race19 of the 30 placed horses had SP's of under 10/1I will probably pick 2 well fancied here in this race
  • Race 5
  • The Brown Advisory/Merriebelle Stable Handicap Chase is the last race but 1 on day 3, run over 2 miles 5 furlongs6 favourites have been placed in the last 10 years, from the 40 placed horses 19 were priced at 10/1 or shorter11 of the 40 horses placed had an SP of 25/1 or biggerI will pick 3 in this race, 2 at around the 10/1 mark and another at slightly bigger odds (16/1-20/1)
  • Race 6
  • Yet another chase here and again for Amateur riders, the Fulke Walwyn/Kim Muir Chase is run over 3 miles 1 and 1/2 furlongs and only 4 of the last 10 favourites have placed in the race14 single figure priced horses have placed in the race, whilst 23 of the placed horses had an Sp of between 10/1 & 20/1I will pick 3 horses in this race, all 3 will probably be priced between about 7/1 & 16/1So my day 3 placepot will probably be 2 x 3 x 2 x 2 x 3 x 3 = 216 bets

Day 4

  • Race 1
  • The Triumph Hurdle opens day 4 for placepot punters and is run over 2 miles 1 furlong, years gone by, this used to have 4 places for the placepot even though it wasn't a handicapIt usually attracts a big field but 6 favourites have placed in the first 3 in the last 10 years20 of the 30 placed horses from the last 10 years have had an SP in single figures, i will be taking 2 horses in this race, both in single figures
  • Race 2
  • The County Hurdle is race 2 on the final day, yet another ultra competitive handicap hurdle race, this one is ran over 2 miles 1 furlongFavourites have a very poor record here with only 2 favourites placed and 1 joint favourite (the wrong one for placepot purposes)Only 9 of the 40 placed horses have returned an SP in single figures, yet 23 of the 40 placed horses have had an SP of 20/1 or bigger, with 3 x 50/1 & 3 x 66/1 horses being placedThis is a very tough race and i will be picking 4 in the race, 2 x under 20/1 and probably 2 around the 20/1 mark
  • Race 3
  • Another hurdle race on day 4, this time it's the Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle, run over 3 milesOnly 4 of the last 10 favourites have been placed in the race, despite some well fancied horses running14 of the 30 placed horses have returned single figure SP's, i will probably pick 2 horses under 10/1 in the race
  • Race 4
  • The Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup is the biggest race of the meeting and race 4 on day 4 for placepot punters and run over 3 miles 2 furlongs and a half furlong6 favourites have been placed in the last 10 years, 22 of the 30 placed horses have returned with single figure SP'sI will be picking 2 in the race, both near the top of the betting
  • Race 5
  • The ST James Place Foxhunters Chase is the Amateur riders Gold Cup as it''s run over the exact same course and trip4 favourites and 1 joint favourite (correct selection for placepot purposes) have placed in the last 10 years14 of the 30 placed horses have returned at single figure SP's, although 5 placed horses have returned at 50/1 or biggerThis is race where i will probably pick 2 near the head of the betting but i could easily take 3
  • Race 6
  • The Martin Pipe Conditionals Jockey Handicap Hurdle wraps up the final days placepot, its run over 2 miles 4 and a half furlongs and is a race restricted only to conditional jockeys (jockeys that need to claim weight in a normal race)There have only been 9 runnings of the race for us to look at, but only 3 favourites have been placed from the 36 placed horses in those 9 years11 of the 36 placed horses finished in single figures, 20 of the other 25 had an Sp of 14/1 or biggerI will pick 3 in this race, 1 under 10/1 and 2 priced between 10/1 & 16/1So my day 4 placepot will probably be 2 x 4 x 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 144 bets
