Horse Racing Trainers To Follow In April

Horse Racing Trainers To Follow In April

April Trainers

We stand at +£39.57 LSP after a March that disappointingly tailed off a little from Cheltenham onwards.  April see's the Grand National, Punchestown and the start of the Flat proper, more important we actually have racing this April!  With no 2020 stats to call upon I've simply gone with all our winning April 2019 trainers, when I say all, we actually had 14 winning trainers in the last April blog, I will be backing them all this month but only the best 10 will be in here.  I'll put a list of all the one's I'm betting in the comments below.  April 2019 provided a mammoth +£102.46 LSP

GB FLAT TURF

RICHARD FAHEY (ALL)

North Yorkshire trainer who usually starts the season well, he made +£29.30 LSP in the last April blog and will provide loads of runners this month.

  • 2015     21/96     22%     +£23.03
  • 2016     20/113   18%      (£ 2.80)
  • 2017     20/131   15%      (£ 0.18)
  • 2018     12/73     16%     +£11.75
  • 2019     10/86     12%     +£ 8.25

We made more than treble the profits using early morning prices from just 10 winners last year and our profits were almost double in 2018 from 12 winners so I have no doubt we would have made gains in both 2016 and 2017 with 20 winners.

Richard Fahey

Whilst other trainers are readying and preparing their horses Fahey is running his and looking to get a head start in the trainer's championship. He often has 2 in the same race and the outsider of the 2 should not be ignored.

MICK EASTERBY (3yo+)

We're back in North Yorkshire with 90 year old "Spitting" Mick, a great character and still knows the time or day, +£5.00 LSP last time around so no reason to desert him.

  • 2015     4/36     11%     +£8.00
  • 2016     7/31     23%     +£49.75
  • 2017     9/37     24%     +£14.75
  • 2018     3/23     13%       (£4.38)
  • 2019     2/24       8%       (£4.00)

We also made a profit from his runners in 2018, his winners last year were 14's and 11's so if he gets anywhere near double figure winners the profits could be huge.  Remember to ignore his 2yo's though.

IRELAND FLAT TURF

GER LYONS (3yo's)

Back again after another successful April with his 3yo's.  He could be the one to challenge O'Brien most this season.

  • 2015      1/14     7%     (£11.13)
  • 2016      4/11    36%   +£23.50
  • 2017      6/23    26%   +£ 9.00
  • 2018      3/12    25%   +£ 5.00
  • 2019      3/33      9%    +£ 2.25

The strike rate was a bit disappointing last time but a 25's winner early in the month almost guaranteed profit, we doubled the SP profit and made four times the SP profit in 2018.

DERMOT WELD (3yo+)

The legend that is Dermot Weld, an April regular and we did well not to get rid of him in 2019 after a losing 2018 but he'd had loads of big priced seconds in 2018 and our faith was rewarded with figures of +£11.27

  • 2013     7/29     24%     +£15.00
  • 2014    18/38    47%     +£19.31
  • 2015    14/52    27%      (£ 9.59)
  • 2016    12/48    25%      (£14.93)
  • 2017     7/42     17%     +£14.53
  • 2018     4/28     14%      (£11.25)
  • 2019    10/48    21%     +£  1.48

He won't run many 2yo's so early in the campaign but if he does ignore them, they rarely win.

GB AW

HUGO PALMER (ALL)

Newmarket trainer who is an April AW reg, a tiny blip in 2017 but back in each of our last two years.

  • 2014     1/3      33%     +£8.00
  • 2015     1/4      25%     +£3.00
  • 2016     3/13    23%     +£2.25
  • 2017     2/13    15%      (£2.33)
  • 2018     4/9      44%     +£15.30
  • 2019     4/15    25%      +£ 1.04

A really impressive strike rate over a 6 year period, our own profits were +£5.94 last year and three of his last four runners were placed at nice prices or it could have been much much more.

MARCO BOTTI (ALL)

A standing dish in the AW blogs but was the real star in 2019 when he gave us +£75.25 LSP.

  • 2015     8/23     35%     +£10.09
  • 2016     4/17     23%      (£0.50)
  • 2017     3/13     23%     +£11.00
  • 2018     3/21     14%     +£14.00
  • 2019     6/36     17%     +£54.50

Winners at 40's 18's 16's 16's and 12's and some big priced seconds to boot.

TOM DASCOMBE (4yo+)

Cheshire trainer who does really well with his older horses on the AW in April.

  • 2014    2/6     33%     +33.25
  • 2015    2/6     33%     +£1.80
  • 2016    2/9     22%     +£9.00
  • 2017    0/5      0%      (£5.00)
  • 2018    3/4     75%     +£16.00
  • 2019    2/6     33%      +£ 4.44

Won't have loads of runners but he's running at better than one in three over a 6 year period.

SIMON CRISFORD (ALL)

Back from last month and now has his son in tow, we were rewarded for keeping faith in 2019 after he'd had loads of seconds in 2018.  Our reward was a +£12.00 LSP.

  • 2015     2/3     67%     +£16.20
  • 2016     1/5     20%     +£8.00
  • 2017     4/7     57%     +£6.50
  • 2018     1/15     7%      (£12.50)
  • 2019     1/9      11%     +£12.00

Again a third of his runners finished second but he got a 20/1 winner over the line so we'll go again.

GB NH

National Hunt Trainers

The two National Hunt trainers look especially notable this month.

MATT SHEPHERD (CHASE)

An annual April trainer seems to show a profit year in and year out with his chasers.

  • 2013      1/4      25%      +£ 1.50
  • 2014      1/1     100%     +£12.00
  • 2015      1/2      50%      +£15.00
  • 2016      2/3      67%      +£16.63
  • 2017      2/6      33%      +£3.38
  • 2018      4/6      67%      +£12.00
  • 2019      1/4      25%       +£ 4.00

I know he doesn't have loads of runners but it's very very rare you have a clean sweep in bold especially over 7 years, a must for inclusion.

NEIL KING (NON BUMPERS)

Another back from 2018 and 2019, the best of our NH trainers in 2019

  • 2013     2/16    13%     +£3.00
  • 2014     3/11    27%     +£5.75
  • 2015     5/19    26%     +£5.73
  • 2016     4/15    27%     +£8.50
  • 2017     3/14    21%     +£2.00
  • 2018     3/26    12%     +£1.50
  • 2019     3/26     12%    +£1.50

Amazingly has the same figures the last two years (I had to triple check) and whilst a better strike rate would be preferable we made +£5.00 in 2019 so no need to discount just yet.

As always please leave any, questions, comments or observations below, good luck.
