Both the Rowley Mile & July Course at Newmarket share starting points for races run over 10 furlongs and upwards. The July Course breaks off first at the mile point whilst the Rowley Mile straight is encountered half a furlong later.

Both courses are wide and galloping with undulations with a slight climb to the finish. The 'dip' on the Rowley Mile a couple of furlongs from home can cause horses to become unbalanced.

Because they have two courses and have so many meetings at Newmarket stall placement is variable, which makes any draw bias unpredictable. Listen out to the clerk of course when he talks about stall placement, fresh strips of ground, and any bias he notes.

In races with lots of runners like the 1000 and 2000 Guineas and the Cambridgeshire Handicap, the runners will often split into two or more groups so the advantage can be with runners following where the pacesetters are positioned rather than any stall position bias.

The Rowley Mile Course is wide and galloping in nature with a slight climb to the finish, you will hear commentators mention the dip inside the final two furlongs where horses especially inexperienced maidens can become unbalanced, races can be won and lost going into and coming out of the dip.

Similar to the Rowley Mile, the July Course is undulating and those who have watched races know it suits galloping types who are comfortable striding out, you need to stay the distance on both courses with a steady uphill climb to the winning line.

Trainer Mark Johnston has had a very good record on the July Course since 2015 which is not surprising as many of his runners tend to race handily or force the pace. The great unbeaten 'Frankel' won his very first race on the July Course at Newmarket.

With over 50 training stables based in and around Newmarket, you get a lot of talking horses and stable whispers, bookies in the town and on course tend to be in the know, especially in 2-year-old races where there is little previous form.

Newmarket (Rowley) Draw Bias

When breaking Newmarket (Rowley) down into trips you can look at which stall and trip combination has produced the best LSP, that would be stall 2 over a trip of 6f which has, over the last five years produced an LSP of +104.76. The stall with the worst loss at Newmarket (Rowley) in the win market when breaking it down to race trips is stall 5 over a trip of 1m, backing all runners in this stall over that trip over the past five years would have returned a loss of -95.39.

Here we have the draw bias for Newmarket (Rowley) taken into consideration races with ten or more runners, we will break down the figures by race distance, draws can be much more important over the shorter trips in which runners do not have time to find their position during the race meaning the draw is probably more important than the races over longer distances.

  • Sprints (5f to 7½f)
  • Mile (1m to 1m1½f)
  • Middle Distance (1m2f to 1m5½f)

The following table shows a breakdown over a group of trips and shows how each position of the draw does, for example in a twelve-runner race would be Low (Stalls 1-4), Mid (Stalls 5-8) and High (Stalls 9-12), the positions will always be lowest stall number to highest.
