Nottingham Racecourse Guide

The track is situated in Colwick Park and is often referred to by that name, racing has been staged at this venue since 1900.

Nottingham since dispensing with National Hunt racing in 1996 has suffered, it lacks quality and identity and is surrounded by racetracks that seem to be working harder to attract publicity

Southwell and Leicester are only 20 minutes away and hold the same standard of racing, Doncaster is an hour away and if racegoers wanted a special “day at the races” they are far more likely to travel the hour to Doncaster.

Nottingham, it seems needs some love and attention from its owners, the Jockey Club.

Type Of Racing: Flat only

Nottingham Tips

If tipsters watch the races at the course you can see that the left-hand bends are sharp and tight, away from the turns it suits long-striding galloping types, especially the home straight which seems to go on forever. Horses can go off too quickly without realising that energy needs to be conserved at Nottingham.

It seems high numbers are favoured over 5 and 6 furlongs, low numbers do seem inconvenienced somewhat, horse racing tipsters will need to monitor this as this seems a new and recent bias. Over 7 furlongs it helps to be a true miler, over 1 mile 2 it helps if you can get a mile and a half.

Be wary of betting on photo finishes particularly in the sprints as the winning line is angled and camera shots may be deceptive.

Nottingham Draw Bias

If you want the most profitable stall at Nottingham then you need to look at races over 6f and focus on stall 4 as this has produced an LSP of +84.21 over the last five years. With an LSP of -105.72, the most unsuccessful stall at Nottingham is stall 1 when backing runners over a trip of 1m½f over the last five years.

Here we have the draw bias for Nottingham taken into consideration races with ten or more runners, we will break down the figures by race distance, draws can be much more important over the shorter trips in which runners do not have time to find their position during the race meaning the draw is probably more important than the races over longer distances.

  • Sprints (5f to 7½f)
  • Mile (1m to 1m1½f)
  • Middle Distance (1m2f to 1m5½f)

The following table shows a breakdown over a group of trips and shows how each position of the draw does, for example in a twelve-runner race would be Low (Stalls 1-4), Mid (Stalls 5-8) and High (Stalls 9-12), the positions will always be lowest stall number to highest.
