Leopardstown Course Guide

Leopardstown is the best dual-purpose course in Ireland with numerous top-class events taking place throughout the year in the south Dublin location.

National Hunt Highlights:

Leopardstown plays host to fifteen Grade 1 races with seven taking place during the 'Christmas Festival' meeting including the Paddy Power Chase which has seen top-class winners down the years.

The likes of Douvan, Sizing Europe, Big Zeb, Moscow Flyer and Papillon have all won the PP Chase before going on to further glory at the Cheltenham/Aintree festivals.

Additionally, during the Christmas Festival is the Future Champions Novice Hurdle, a Grade 1 that has been a springboard for many a good type and also the Christmas Hurdle, a Grade 1 previously won by the likes of Apples Jade and Vroum Vroum Mag.

The Savills Chase (formerly known as the Lexus Chase) is usually a Cheltenham Gold Cup pointer with numerous winners here going on to take the 'blue riband' in March.

Just going back the last 20 years or so the list is endless, Imperial Call, Best Mate, Denman, Synchronised and Bobs Worth plus numerous other top-class winners who went on to further Grade 1 glory at the major festivals.

Flat Highlights:

Leopardstown hosts nineteen Group races and six Listed races on the flat here, the Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas Trial and Derby trial kicks off the early season flat meetings and can be informative pointers for the classics on either side of the Irish Sea.

The undoubted highlight of the Leopardstown flat calendar is the Irish Champion Stakes run in September over ten furlongs for three-year-olds and upwards.

The best middle-distance runners cross swords with plenty of English and Irish Derby winners on the roll of honour down the years.

The list is staggering but to name a few there has been Sea The Stars (producing top-quality progeny of his own now), Golden Horn, New Approach, High Chaparral, Fantastic Light, Giants Causeway, Pilsudski, Swain, Daylami and Roaring Lion (2018).

Leopardstown Racecourse Map

Flat Course - A wide, left-handed oval track of around a mile and three quarters in extent.

The course is fairly level except for a slight rise from the last bend and the turns are easy. It is essentially galloping in character.

National Hunt Course - A wide, left-handed oval track, about a mile and three quarters in length. The course is fairly level with easy turns except for a slight rise from the last bend.

It provides a fair test, although three of the fences in the back straight are close together and occasionally catches out the less-accomplished chaser, and the finishing straight is relatively short.

The inner hurdles course, used occasionally, is rather sharper in character than the chase track and tends to provide a significant test of tactical speed.

Leopardstown Draw Bias

When breaking Leopardstown down into trips then you can look at which stall and trip combination has produced the best LSP, that would be stall 2 over a trip of 7f which has, over the last five years produced an LSP of +34.76. With an LSP of -106.78, the most unsuccessful stall at Leopardstown is stall 4 when backing runners over a trip of 7f over the last five years.

Here we have the draw bias for Leopardstown taken into consideration races with ten or more runners, we will break down the figures by race distance, draws can be much more important over the shorter trips in which runners do not have time to find their position during the race meaning the draw is probably more important than the races over longer distances.

  • Sprints (5f to 7½f)
  • Mile (1m to 1m1½f)
  • Middle Distance (1m2f to 1m5½f)

The following table shows a breakdown over a group of trips and shows how each position of the draw does, for example in a twelve-runner race would be Low (Stalls 1-4), Mid (Stalls 5-8) and High (Stalls 9-12), the positions will always be lowest stall number to highest.
