Romania Liga I Format, Betting and Past Winners

Liga I consists of fourteen teams, eleven who were part of the league in the previous season plus two new teams who are promoted from Liga II.

The fourteenth team that will take part in Liga I is decided by a Play-Off between the team that finished twelfth in Liga I the previous season and the team that finished third in Liga II.

Since the 2015/16 season, the Liga I season has been split into two sections. In the initial stage, all fourteen teams play each other home and away.

After those twenty-six matches, the top six teams advance to a Championship round where a further home and away fixture is played out to decide the Liga I Champions.

The finishing positions also dictate which teams take place in the Champions League and Europa League. All qualified teams start the Championship round with half of their points from the regular season.

The teams that finished in the bottom eight places in the first half of the season now move into the Relegation play-outs.

The eight teams in the play-outs face each other home and away once again and the teams that finish thirteenth and fourteenth are automatically relegated to Liga II. All qualified teams start the play-outs round with half of their points from the regular season.

The team that finishes in twelfth place overall goes into a two-leg play-off with the team that finishes third in Liga II. FC Steaua Bucuresti have been the dominant team in Liga 1 winning Romania’s top league an amazing twenty-six times.

OLBG will have predictions and tips throughout the Liga 1 season including outright market and match-by-match picks.
