I have been interested in horseracing for pushing 5 years now, and am just about starting to feel that I have something worthwhile to say on the subject. It is an endlessly interesting hobby to me (my year is now starting to be measured around the big flat and National Hunt festivals rather than by weeks and months!) and I would love to convey some of my enthusiasm for the sport to the general public.
I do gamble, but I don't consider it essential to my enjoyment of the sport and nowadays get involved seriously on a rarer basis. When I do, 90% of my bets are in Novice events over jumps or sprint handicapson the flat, which I find tend to reward careful watching and re-watching more than longer flat races.
I have drifted away from football as a sport, mainly because of the unedifying effects of the money involved at the top of the game, but I still enjoy the big matches. Growing up with a Welsh father, rugby was the only sport to watch as a kid and as a result I'm in the strange position of being a Welsh fan in Rugby Union and English for everything else...
