McCain Odds Go Out As US Presidential Election Draws Nearer
Friday 10 October 2008 at 11:08
The odds of John McCain becoming the next US President have continued to drift, as Barack Obama's popularity grows.
Republican candidate Mr McCain is now trailing the Democratic nominee by 11 points in Gallup polls and punters can get odds of 4/1 with Boylesports that he will take office.
Mr Obama, meanwhile, is rated at 1/7 by Betfred after extending his lead in the polls this week, although Coral offer a better price of 2/9.
The candidates took part in the second of three televised debates on Tuesday and part of Gallup's survey of registered voters was conducted after it took place.
It found that 52 per cent prefer Mr Obama, compared to 41 per cent for Mr McCain.
But with 56 per cent stating that they believed the Democratic candidate to have performed better in the debate, compared to 23 per cent who thought his opponent won, that lead may be extended in coming days.
Each candidate is strongly favoured to take his own state in the November 4th election, with Paddy Power offering MrCain at 1/20 in Arizona and Mr Obama at 1/300 in Illinois.
