Thursday 09 October 2008 at 09:14
Hu Jia has emerged as the favourite to win this year's Nobel Peace Prize.
The recipient of the award will be announced tomorrow and Paddy Power has the Chinese dissident at 7/4.
Mr Hu is currently imprisoned in China and it is believed that the Nobel Committee may seek to highlight human rights issues in the country.
"Hu Jia has become the most well known Chinese dissident now and it has been a very long time since anyone [related to China] has won the prize," said director of the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo Stein Toennesson.
Second favourite is Thich Quanq Do, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who is rated at 7/1 by Paddy Power.
Other names featuring on the list of candidates to succeed 2007 winners Al Gore and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change include Chechen human rights lawyer Lydia Yusupova (6/1).
Bob Geldof and Bono have been also shortlisted, with Paddy Power offering them at 33/1 and 50/1 respectively, while former prime minister Tony Blair is given odds of 66/1.
And an outside bet is available for George Bush, who is at 500/1.
