Obama Remains Frontrunner To Become Next US President
Monday 06 October 2008 at 11:06
One month ahead of polling day, Barack Obama continues to be the favourite to become the next US President.
With odds of 1/4 being offered by several bookies, including Betfred and Ladbrokes, the betting market is reflecting Mr Obama's lead in the polls.
Gallup polling has shown the Democratic Party's candidate to be leading his Republican counterpart, John McCain, by a significant margin for well over a week.
The best price punters can now get for Mr Obama is 2/7 with Coral, although this has been dropping.
Mr McCain, meanwhile, is at 11/4 with Betfred and Paddy Power, among others.
A Gallup poll following a televised debate between vice presidential candidates showed that 50 per cent of registered voters would choose the Democratic candidate, compared to 43 per cent for Mr McCain.
This did, however, mark a slight increase in the latter's figures, as the organisation noted a decline in undecided voters.
Nonetheless, it was the second consecutive poll in which Mr Obama had reached the symbolic threshold of 50 per cent mark and bookies appear to expect him to hold his lead.
