Gap Opening In Race To Become Next US President
Wednesday 01 October 2008 at 10:13
The odds of Barack Obama becoming the next US President have come in as polls continue to show that he is proving more popular than John McCain.
William Hill has continued to drop odds for the Democratic candidate, now offering him at 4/11.
Last week Mr Obama was rated at 4/7 by the same bookmaker, although this dropped to 4/9 following the first presidential debate.
Graham Sharpe, spokesman for William Hill, explained that despite many commentators believing there had been little to separate the candidates, "political punters appear to believe that Obama got the better of their debate and has coped more effectively with his responses to the financial situation".
The latest Gallup poll shows that Mr Obama is opening up a lead, with 49 per cent of registered voters saying they would vote for him, compared to the 43 per cent that prefer Republican candidate Mr McCain.
Sportingbet offers the best odds of the latter becoming US President (11/5), while Mr Obama's best price of 4/11 is offered by Bet 365 and Stan James as well as William Hill.
