McCain Odds Drift In US President Betting Market
Friday 19 September 2008 at 11:12
Bookies have been bringing in the odds of Barack Obama becoming the next US President.
Despite William Hill predicting that John McCain would become the frontrunner by then end of this week, odds of the Republican candidate reaching the White House have drifted with Blue Square.
The bookmaker now offers Mr McCain at 5/4, having had him at 11/10 earlier in the week, although punters can get a better price of 13/8 with Coral.
Mr Obama, meanwhile, has seen his odds come in with both 888Sport and Blue Square, which had him at 4/6 earlier in the week but now offer 4/7.
However, the latter price is still available with Paddy Power and is the best in the market.
The drifting of Mr McCain's odds may be explained by the latest Gallup poll of likely voters in the US, which found that his Democratic opponent is the man 48 per cent of people would like to see replace George Bush as US President.
It gives Mr Obama a four per cent lead and is thought to represent a return to the trend seen before the party's national conventions began.
