Betting Market Reflects Close Race To Become US President
Wednesday 17 September 2008 at 11:05
John McCain is closing the gap on Barack Obama in the race to become US President, the betting market suggests.
Odds of the Republican winning November's election came in to 11/10 with Blue Square and Paddy Power recently, although the best price available is 13/8 with Coral.
And with Mr Obama's best price currently being the 4/6 offered by 888Sport, Blue Square and Paddy Power, bookies seem to think the contest will be a close one.
This is something that was reflected in the latest opinion poll by Gallup, which could barely separate the two candidates.
It found that 47 per cent of registered voters would choose Mr McCain, while 46 per cent currently prefer his Democratic opponent.
The firm notes that the polling seems to be returning to the trend of a dead heat that was seen before interest generated by the two parties' national conventions over the last few weeks saw first Mr Obama and then Mr McCain taking a lead.
Last week William Hill predicted that Mr McCain would soon become the favourite in the betting market.
