Punters Pile Money On Europe For Ryder Cup Glory
Wednesday 03 September 2008 at 09:03
The majority of punters believe firmly that Europe will win the Ryder Cup again this year.
At least this is what has been suggested by William Hill, which claimed to have received wagers as big as £4,000 that the team will defeat the US for the fourth consecutive year.
Graham Sharpe, spokesman for the bookmaker, remarked: "Europe are clearly favourites for the Ryder Cup with our punters, who have lumped on them, making them a hefty five-figure loser in our book at the moment."
The statement came as Paul Azinger announced his four wildcard picks for the US squad - Steve Stricker, Hunter Mahan, Chad Campbell and JB Holmes.
Paddy Power offers the best odds on Europe coming out on top at 5/6, while punters can get 11/8 on their opponents at VC Bet.
Sergio Garcia is the 5/1 favourite at Boylesports to be Europe's top points scorer, ahead Padraig Harrington (11/2, Totesport) and Lee Westwood (7/1, Boylesports).
Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson is 11/2 at SkyBet to be the top American, along with Jim Furyk.
Anthony Kim is the third favourite at 9/1 with William Hill.
