Messi Helps Give Argentina Winning Olympics Start
Friday 08 August 2008 at 09:03
Lionel Messi looked in excellent form yesterday as he helped Argentina to a 2-1 victory over the Ivory Coast in the country's Olympic Games opener.
The Barcelona striker, who was only cleared to play in Beijing by his club last week, scored the first goal and helped set up the second as the tournament favourites got off to a winning start.
Following the performance Argentina are 7/4 to win gold at Paddy Power, ahead of Brazil (9/4, Coral) who defeated Belgium 1-0 in their first match.
Italy also won yesterday, thrashing Honduras 3-0. They are the third favourites to take the Olympic title at 7/1 with Paddy Power.
Messi is now also joint-favourite to be the Champions League top goalscorer in the upcoming season at SkyBet.
He is priced at 10/1 for the prestigious award, along with this year's winner Cristiano Ronaldo and Fernando Torres.
Barcelona are the fourth favourites to triumph in the competition at 9/1 with Ladbrokes, behind holders Manchester United (6/1, Bet 365), Chelsea (7/1, Blue Square) and Real Madrid (8/1, VC Bet).
