Singh In Good Form Ahead Of US PGA Championship
Monday 04 August 2008 at 09:31
Vijay Singh warmed up for this week's US PGA Championship with a one-shot victory in the World Golf Championships (WGC) Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone.
The Fijian had never won a WGC event before and was without a tour victory of any sort since March 2007.
However, he held his nerve to hole a par putt on the last, ensuring he finished on ten under - a shot ahead of Lee Westwood and Stuart Appleby.
Singh is now best-priced 20/1 with Paddy Power to win the US PGA at Oakland Hills, having previously clinched the title in both 1998 and 2004.
With Tiger Woods still injured, Phil Mickelson is likely to start as favourite for the fourth Major of the year and he can currently be backed at 10/1 with Sportingbet.
Mickelson's preparation was far from ideal, as he could only shoot level par on the final day at Firestone, meaning he finished fourth after starting his round tied for the lead.
Westwood is 28/1 with Stan James, but Open champion Padraig Harrington is the shortest price European at 18/1 with Skybet.
Golf fans thinking about a patriotic punt can get 12/5 with William Hill on a first ever European triumph in the US PGA.
