Favourites Safely Through In World Matchplay Darts
Friday 25 July 2008 at 09:03
The two favourites to win the 2008 Stan James World Matchplay championship at Blackpool's Winter Gardens successfully made it through the quarter-finals last night.
Reigning champion James Wade was given a good test by Matt Clark, but managed to produce a 97.65 three-dart average as he triumphed 16-12, Planet Darts reports.
Meanwhile, Phil 'The Power' Taylor's average slipped below 100 for the first time, but 95.78 was still enough to defeat Kevin McDine 16-6.
Taylor will play old foe Dennis Priestley in the semi-final tonight following the Menace's 16-14 victory over Alan Tabern.
Meanwhile, Wade will face off against Wayne Mardle, who beat pre-tournament third-favourite Raymond van Barneveld 18-16 to stay in the competition.
The bookies suggest that a Taylor v Wade final is on the cards, with the world number one 1/25 at William Hill to get past Priestley tonight.
Wade is less of a favourite against Mardle, but is still well backed at 1/4 with Bet 365.
Taylor is 1/4 to win the championship outright at SkyBet, followed by Wade (7/2, Bet 365), Mardle (28/1, Totesport) and Priestley (50/1, Boylesports).
