King George VI And QE Stakes Favourite May Slow The Pace
Wednesday 23 July 2008 at 08:51
Punters should not be surprised if Duke of Marmalade attempts to slow down the pace of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot on Saturday.
This is what has been suggested by jockey legend Pat Eddery, who told the Independent that due to the horse's inexperience over the 12-furlong distance, his team may be looking to keep the pace steady so as not to tire him out.
"It wouldn't be a surprise if [trainer Aidan O'Brien] tried to control the race by slowing it down if he could, either with the pacemaker or possibly you could see a scenario where the favourite made all," Eddery commented.
A fast race typically ensures that the best horse wins, Eddery added, but this does not necessarily mean O'Brien will wish to go down this route with the Prince of Wales Stakes champion.
Duke of Marmalade is 10/11 at Sportingbet to triumph this weekend, with Youmzain (3/1, Paddy Power) considered by most to be the biggest threat.
Other contenders are Lucarno (8/1, VC Bet), Papal Bull (9/1, Paddy Power), Ask (14/1, Sportingbet) and Macarthur (14/1, Blue Square).
