Taylor Off To A Flyer In World Matchplay Darts
Tuesday 22 July 2008 at 08:46
Phil "The Power" Taylor put in by far the most impressive performance of any player during round one of the Stan James World Matchplay tournament in Blackpool last night.
The 13-time world champion averaged 103.53 for three darts in his 10-6 victory over Steve Beaton, planetdarts.tv reports.
Beaton had the second best average of the night at 97.91, followed by Kevin McDine, who ended his surprise 10-8 win over Adrian Lewis on 96.02.
Third favourite Raymond van Barneveld was much less impressive against Mark Frost, in a game which was forced to go to an extra leg.
He averaged 88.41 and managed to scrape through 11-9.
Following yesterday's matches, Taylor is 4/7 to win the competition at Sportingbet, ahead of reigning champion James Wade (6/1, Coral), who plays today.
Van Barneveld is the only other player given a realistic chance of becoming champion by the bookmakers, with Coral offering odds of 10/1 on the Dutchman.
Dennis Priestley, Tony Eccles, Terry Jenkins, Matt Clark and John Part were the other competitors to progress to round two.
