Mervyn King was knocked out in the first round of the Stan James World Matchplay championship last night.
The 2004 World Masters winner was defeated 10-7 by Colin Osborne as the tournament got underway at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool.
Also sent home on the opening night were Mark Dudbridge and Colin Lloyd.
Dudbridge, who was also Masters champion in 2002, lost 11-9 to Wayne Mardle, while Lloyd, who won the World Matchplay in 2005, was beaten 10-6 by Mark Walsh.
The first three matches have made little difference to the betting market and Phil Taylor remains a huge a favourite to win the competition outright at 4/6 with Coral.
Reigning titlist James Wade is 11/2 at Sportingbet, while five-time world champion Raymond van Barneveld is 8/1 at Totesport.
Mardle, who has never won a major darts tournament before, is the most fancied of the players to make it through last night.
He is the ninth favourite at 40/1 with Sportingbet, while Walsh is 66/1 at Totesport.
Punters can also get odds of 66/1 on Osborne at Paddy Power.
