McDowells Open Championship Price Cut Friday 18 July 2008 at 08:41 Graeme McDowell continued his recent good form to claim a share of the lead at the Open Championship, as some of the sport's biggest names struggled to cope with the conditions on the opening day at Royal Birkdale.
The Northern Irishman shot a one under par 69 to finish the day tied with Australia's Robert Allenby and US Open runner-up Rocco Mediate.
McDowell's performance saw his odds for victory slashed. Despite his win at last weekend's Scottish Open, he was generally available at 40/1 before teeing off, but he is now best-priced at 12/1 with Ladbrokes.
Similarly, Allenby's price has come in from 100/1 to 14/1 at William Hill, while Mediate is now best-priced at 28/1 with Totesport having been a 250/1 chance at VC Bet on Thursday.
Sergio Garcia is the 8/1 favourite at Bet 365 after carding a first round of 72, while Adam Scott is available at 10/1 with Stan James following an opening day 70.
World number two Phil Mickelson struggled with the strong wind and rain on his way to 79, while 2002 champion Ernie Els finished a shot further back.
The American can be backed at 2/1 on Betfair to make the cut, while Els is 23/10 to play at the weekend.
