Punters Pile Money On Ledger To Win Oscars

A multitude of big bets are being placed on Heath Ledger to win a posthumous best supporting actor gong at the Oscars next year, it has been reported.
William Hill has claimed that Ledger is being heavily backed to pick up an award for his portrayal of The Joker in upcoming Batman sequel The Dark Knight.
The bookmaker has been forced to cut his price massively from 12/1 to 3/1, with Meryl Streep's performance in Mama Mia the only other Oscars bet apparently receiving much interest.
Rupert Adams, spokesman for the company, remarked: "Every year there is a buzz about a particular performance and we always gets calls but we have not seen this much early interest in the Oscars since Helen Mirren won with her flawless performance as the Queen."
Streep is 4/1 to win at William Hill, with the double on them both triumphing available at 20/1.
Ledger's The Dark Knight co-star Christian Bale is also being tipped in some quarters to win for his part as Batman. Odds of 6/1 are available at Paddy Power.
The movie will be released in UK cinemas on July 25th.
