Yeats Set For Ascot Gold Cup Treble
Thursday 19 June 2008 at 08:50
Aidan O'Brien-trained Yeats will look to cap a personal treble and a hat-trick of Group 1 wins for his stable in the Ascot Gold Cup (15:45 BST) this afternoon.
The Irish horse is looking to become only the second ever to win three Ascot Gold Cups and his owners will be hoping he can replicate the success of Haradasun and Henrythenavigator, who won the Queen Anne Stakes and St James's Stakes respectively earlier in the week.
Yeats is a big favourite at the bookmakers, with Paddy Power offering the longest odds on victory at 7/5.
The thoroughbred should face stiff competition in the form of unbeaten Coastal Path (9/4, VC Bet), however, and Rob Wright of the Times believes the French horse can usurp the reigning champion.
"Coastal Path is fancied to find the necessary improvement to make his first attempt at the highest level a winning one," the racing expert remarked.
Geordieland is the only other horse considered a partial threat by the bookmakers, with Paddy Power offering odds of 9/1.
Allegretto is 18/1 with Coral, while Regal Flush is 20/1 with Blue Square.
