Shearer Says He Will Not Be Next Blackburn Manager
Thursday 12 June 2008 at 09:14
Alan Shearer has ruled himself out of the contest to be the next Blackburn manager.
Match of the Day Live presenter Gary Lineker put the question to the former Rovers striker at half-time during the Switzerland-Turkey Euro 2008 match last night.
Shearer revealed he had been approached by the club's chief executive John Williams to go on a shortlist for the job but "politely declined".
He added that he "was very flattered" to be considered a potential candidate but other commitments such as his TV punditry work mean that he is unable to pursue the vacancy.
It is not the first time that Shearer has been linked with a manager job that he later distanced himself from, having been involved in similar situations with England and Newcastle United in recent years.
The 37-year-old had been among the favourites for the Blackburn position but has now drifted out to 47/1 at Betfair.
Sam Allardyce is expected to get the job by the bookmakers, with Betfair offering odds of 48/29 on the former Bolton Wanderers and Newcastle boss.
He is followed by Paul Ince (4/1, Ladbrokes), Steve McClaren (12/1, Ladbrokes) and Henk Ten Cate (12/1, Ladbrokes).
