Maguire Eases Into Second Round At Crucible
Friday 25 April 2008 at 11:48
Stephen Maguire booked his place in the second round of the snooker World Championships with a 10-3 victory over Anthony Hamilton yesterday.
After his comprehensive victory the Scotsman's odds have come in slightly to 9/2 with BetFred to be crowned Crucible champion.
Maguire resumed with an 8-1 lead after Wednesday's first session but Hamilton brought it back to 8-3 before the Scot won two frames in a row to clinch the victory.
He went close to a 147-break, missing a tough 15th red, and said he was "gutted" after losing position.
"I was scared that if I got into the white too much I wouldn't even get a shot at the red because it only went in the green pocket," said Maguire, who stormed out of the arena in frustration following the miss.
"I think I broke a tile in the toilet. My hand just 'slipped' and I heard a crack and didn't look back."
Ronnie O'Sullivan remains firm favourite for the World Championship title after wrapping up a 10-5 win over debutant Liu Chang and has odds of 10/3 with Better.
