From 80-1 To 9-4 - England March On
Monday 15 October 2007 at 14:24
When England reached their lowest point in the Rugby World Cup, defeated 36-0 by South Africa, bookies were offering odds as long as 80/1 that they would go on to win.
It's a mark of the extraordinary nature of this World Cup that England have risen from that nadir and are now priced at 9/4 to win the Web Ellis Cup with erstwhile vanquishers South Africa priced as the favourites on 1/3.
One lucky punter on betting exchange Betfair even secured odds of 279/1 that England would go on to win.
Despite the Springboks' billing as favourites, England coach Brian Ashton says England will not be contemplating defeat on Saturday.
"I can't imagine this group of players would ever be satisfied just by getting to the final," he said.
"They have come so far on a very difficult journey during the World Cup. They want to create history."
If England do win they will have to do it without 2003 cup winner Josh Lewsey who has been ruled out through injury.
