Jonny - Its All About Pressure
Thursday 11 October 2007 at 12:04
Pressure is a word often used in describing sporting fixtures, however, for Jonny Wilkinson the pressure he's concerned about is all about the balls.
Jonny's radar has been largely off target in this world cup so far, and the fly-half believes it could all be down to the different pressure the balls have been inflated to.
Against Australia last weekend he missed five kicks out of nine.
Now team bosses have made an official request for him to be allowed to practise with all six match balls at the Stade de France today.
They also want to verify the pressure of each ball before kick-off against France on Saturday.
Greg Thomas, the tournament's director of communications, said when a ball is over inflated its characteristics change.
"Information on the correct pressure is being sent out to the appropriate people. This is not a new ball but a make from the No 1 manufacturers which has been used all over the world for some time," he said.
Wilkinson's kicking is expected to be crucial against France at the weekend. When the two teams met in the semi-final of the 2003 world cup Wilkinson kicked all of England's points when they won 24-7. The odds of that score line again, regardless of where the points come from, are 250/1 with Ladbrokes.
The chances of Jonny finding his aim again and scoring all the points as he did in 2003 are priced at 11/8.
Meanwhile the odds of Jonny to become 'super Jonny' and score a try, conversion, drop goal and penalty are 33/1.
Likewise 33/1 is available on Jonny scoring the winning points in extra time and the same price is on him kicking three successful drop goals.
