France And Ireland Both Fight For Survival
Wednesday 19 September 2007 at 15:40
France v IrelandFrance need to put on one of their better performances if they are to progress in the World Cup, but it remains to be seen as to whether they show themselves as world beaters or shamed hosts when they meet Ireland at the Stade de France on Friday.

France beat England twice and Wales once in warm-ups then went down to an embarrassing defeat against Argentina in their opening pool match before returning for a masterful 87-10 hammering of Namibia.

Les Bleus are priced at 1/5 to beat the Irish, but the two teams have met many times and Ireland need to put in a good performance themselves to save their World Cup hopes. Therefore, odds of 10/3 on an Irish victory look rather more attractive.

French star Sebastien Chabal, scorer of two tries against Namibia, will start the game in the second row alongside Jerome Thion and is priced at 16/1 with Ladbrokes to be first over the line for his team.

"We choose Chabal because of his performances not because of the marketing factor," France coach Bernard Laporte told Reuters.

"If Sebastien is at the top of the bill it's because he is performing well on the pitch, because of his speed, his spring and his fiery power and because he brings enthusiasm, dynamism and confidence to the team."

The odds of Ireland winning by one to ten points and keeping their World Cup dreams alive are at 11/2.ADNFCR-1141-ID-18286197-ADNFCR
