England And South Africa Both Suffer Setbacks
Monday 10 September 2007 at 14:45
Both England and South Africa could be without key players ahead of their crucial World Cup clash on Friday, though England's misfortune has largely been brought on themselves.
BlueSQ has seen both teams equally backed, pricing them each at 10/11 to win, though South Africa are second favourites to win the cup outright on 5/1 with Sporting Bet and 1/8 to win their pool.
However, South Africa have suffered a blow after it emerged their star centre Jean de Villiers will miss the rest of the World Cup.
De Villiers tore his left bicep in the Springboks' defeat of Samoa on Sunday and he will return to South Africa.
England, meanwhile, could be without captain Phil Vickery.
The player has been cited for apparently tripping a USA player during England's first group match on Saturday. Vickery will now face a disciplinary hearing and could be banned for the next match.
It is a blow to England who need a much improved performance if they are to win their group (9/2 with Blue Square) and progress.
They are currently 8/13 with Bet365 to reach just the quarter finals with the odds lengthening to 9/4 to reach the semis and 9/1 to finish runners up.
