England Hopes Of Twenty20 Win Start To Falter
Monday 03 September 2007 at 14:39
England's hopes of lifting the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup have taken a blow with the news that Ravi Bopara could miss the tournament through injury.
The England and Essex all rounder was injured during England's fifth ODI against India at Headlingley.
Bopara, 22, was sent to get x-rays on his thumb after being hit with a ball of his own bowling in a caught and bowled attempt.
There are reports he has been diagnosed with fractured dislocation of his right thumb.
It is bad news for England who are still hoping Andrew Flintoff will shrug off an ankle injury before the team flies out to South Africa next week.
"I feel for Fred. He's desperate to play," coach Peter Moores told Sky Sports.
"The medic is trying to make sure it's a new injury. It's right to be careful and make sure we look after it properly."
England's first game is against Zimbabwe, at Cape Town, on September 13th.
Lack of confidence in the England team has seen them slip to fourth favourites in the betting with Australia, South Africa and Sri Lanka attracting the most money, although expect these odds to come in if Flintoff is deemed fit to play.
