Health Scares Wont Stop Winehouse Domination
Thursday 30 August 2007 at 16:16
Controversy surrounding hard living Amy Winehouse has helped to stall punters, keeping attractive odds for a win at the Mercury Music Prize.
Winehouse's father-in-law went on national radio recently urging fans to boycott her music and calling for her to be disqualified from the award ceremony until she seeks treatment for drug addiction.
That may have been enough to cast some doubt on her chances of winning because by handing her the award event organisers will effectively be opening themselves to accusations of rewarding drug abuse.
Winehouse was hospitalised this month for "severe exhaustion" which is believed to be a result of heavy drinking on top of cocaine, crack and heroin use.
However, it is likely that the scares will do nothing to dent her shot at the prize as even her own father has said that he can't see any point in boycotting her musical success, so take advantage of the almost certain win.
Her Back to Black album's credentials have already been established by her triumph at the Brits and there would be confusion if either Bat for Lashes or Jamie T stole what should be hers.
