Royal Ascot Betting Frenzy Gets Underway
Tuesday 17 June 2008 at 12:29
Royal Ascot odds have been decreasing for months and the big event finally gets underway today with seven Group One races to look forward to over the next five days. Thursday's feature race, the Ascot Gold Cup, sees Yeats bid for a historic hattrick in the race and he is 11/8 with SkyBet to win it.
Ascot Gold Cup Betting Odds
Yeats has been extremely popular all year but he faces a strong rival this year in the form of French raider Coastal Path, trained by Andre Fabre. In the last couple of months he has been backed from 10/1 into a current price of 9/4 with Paddy Power.
All of his winning has been with give in the ground so backers will he hoping for some rain on Wednesday night.
Royal Ascot First Day
There are three Group One races on Tuesday. The Queen Anne, the Kings Stand and the St James Palace Stakes. In the Queen Anne Haradasun is likely to go off favourite and can be backed at 5/1 with Paddy Power. There are two previous Royal Ascot winners in the field, Tariq and Cesare, who are 11/2 with Sportingbet and 15/2 with William Hill respectively.
In the Kings Stand, which is run as a Group One race for the first time this year, Fleeting Spirit is the short priced jolly at 9/4 with Paddy Power whilst in the St James Palace stakes we have an even shorter priced favourite in the shape of English and Irish 2000 Guineas winner Henrythenavigator who is just 4/6 with Blue Square to make it a hattrick of Group Ones this season. He will relish the fast ground.
The Rest Of The Week
Wednesday's feature race is the Prince Of Wales Stakes where Duke Of Marmalade, who is unbeaten in two Group One starts this year, is 7/4 favourite with Sportingbet. His main competition will be from Phoenix Tower who is 5/1 for the race with Paddy Power.
On Friday the Group One race is the Coronation Stakes which is likely to bring many of the 1000 Guineas runners back together. Infallible, who was fourth in that race is the 3/1 favourite with William Hill while Spacious, who finished three quarters of a length ahead of Infallible that day, is 7/2 with Blue Square. Lush Lashes also ran in the 1000 Guineas before being a disappointing run in the Epsom Oaks as favourite is 13/2 with Stan James.
The final Group One race, Saturday's Golden Jubilee Stakes, brings the best six furlong sprinters in the world together and last year's July Cup winner Sakhees Secret heads the market at 4/1 with Ladbrokes. He needs fast ground to show his best form and should get it and stiffest competition could come from Aussie raider Takeover Target who is 7/1 with VC Bet. Takeover Target also runs in the Kings Stand on Tuesday and a good run there would see his odds dramatically reduce for this race as he bids to emulate Aussie start Choisir who won both races in 2003.
