Curragh Going Change Good News For Irish Derby Betting Favourite Despite Drift
Friday 27 June 2008 at 15:58
New Approach's Irish Derby Odds drifted on Friday morning despite 15 milimetres of rain falling ahead of a weekend of unsettled weather. The going is now good to yielding from good and that should suit the Epsom Derby winner who found the ground too firm on his last visit to the course for the Irish 2000 Guineas. New Approach is even money with William Hill despite hitting 8/11 during the week.
Tartan Bearer Could Gain First Group One
Tartan Bearer is most likely to reverse Epsom form with the favourite as he is 7/2 with Paddy Power. He got within half a length of New Approach that day and after just four starts there is every chance he could make the necessary improvement after just four starts.
Casual Conquest Still Has Improvement
Another promising colt with even fewer starts is third favourite Casual Conquest who tasted his first defeat when third in the Epsom classic. He was beaten five lengths that day and is 6/1 with Coral but he has to prove he is effective on ground slower than good.
Aidan O'Brien Has Five In The Race
After dominating Royal Ascot Aidan O'Brien is in the rare position of not having the favourite in a group one race. His best chance appears to be Alessandro Volta who is the mount of Johnny Murtagh. Murtagh has chosen the 14/1 with Bet365 ahead of Washington Irving (20/1 Bet365) who almost dead heated with Alessandro Volta at Epsom, Frozen Fire (33/1 Bet365), Hindu Kush (66/1 Totesport) and Bashkirov (250/1 SkyBet). The pick of those could Frozen Fire who ran Tartan Bearer within a head in the Dante and didn't seem to handle Epsom.
