Forecast Rain A Positive For Favourite In John Smiths Cup Betting Odds
Friday 11 July 2008 at 10:58
The going at York on Friday morning was good to soft but there is plenty of rain forecast before Saturday's John Smiths Cup and there could be a repeat of last year when the race was run on heavy ground. That would suit current favourite Mutajarred, a stand out 11/2 shot with Coral, who is unbeaten in three starts on soft or heavy going.
Another Handicap On Cumani Agenda
Luca Cumani's Monte Alto and Roger Charlton's Proponent are disputing second favouritism. Monte Alto has run well twice in defeat this season and should appreciate slightly easier going but he probably wouldn't want it too soft. He is 7/1 with Bet365 and Paddy Power to make it two big Saturday handicaps in the space of eight days for Luca Cumani who took the Old Newton Cup last week with Mad Rush.
Proponent has raced at both a mile and a mile and a half so far this season but ten furlongs seems to be his best trip and he has already run well on soft ground this season in the Spring Cup. He is 8/1 with Coral.
Royal Ascot Winner After Another Big Pot
Royal Ascot winner Supaseus, who had Monte Alto 2 1/4 lengths behind him on that occasion is 10/1 with Sportingbet and Ladbrokes. He has won on softish ground before but it may be slightly worrying for backers that he has only won at Ascot and Newmarket.
Richard Fahey Saddles Five
Richard Fahey, who has won the race twice in the last ten years, has a strong hand as usual including last year's winner Charlie Tokyo. Charlie Tokyo is 20/1 with William Hill for a repeat performance but the pick of Fahey's five runners could be Flying Clarets who has improved massively over the last two years and has won over a variety of trips on a variety of ground conditions. He should go well whatever happens and is fair value at 16/1 with Bet365 and William Hill.
