Burial Favourite In Mercury Music Prize Betting Odds

 Burial, an anonymous London musician, is favourite to land the 2008 Mercury Music Prize. The album ‘Untrue' which was Metacritic album of 2007, is extremely unusual with a dark, edgy sound and it is exactly the sort of music that excels at the Mercury Music Prize so it is no surprise it heads the betting at 7/2 with Paddy Power and Stan James.
Radiohead Back Again
The second favourite is a much more mainstream effort, this time from Radiohead. ‘In Rainbows' took two years to make and received widespread critical acclaim. It looks sure to be high up in the judges' considerations but the Mercury Music Prize has often gone to newer musicians and this may count against Radiohead who released their first album fifteen years ago. In Rainbows is 5/1 with Blue Square and Ladbrokes.
Giving The Judges The Elbow
Next best in the betting is Elbow with ‘The Seldom Seen Kid' which is 6/1 with Bet365 and SkyBet. The Seldom Seen Kid is Elbow's fourth studio album gained a 9/10 rating with NME and various other critical acclaim.
Another Accolade For Alex Turner
The Last Shadow Puppets are an interesting contender with ‘The Age Of The Understatement' at 8/1 with Blue Square. This is a side project from the Arctic Monkeys' Alex Turner and The Rascals' Miles Kane and is extremely interesting from a betting perspective as The Arctic Monkeys won the 2006 Mercury Music Prize with their debut album and The Last Shadow Puppets could easily follow suit.
Estelle Could Shine In Betting
Also worth a mention is Estelle with ‘Shine'. Estelle is as big as 12/1 with Bet365 and Ladbrokes but Paddy Power clearly know something they don't as they offer just 5/1. Estelle worked with hip hop heavyweights Kanye West and Will I Am on Shine and the only worry may be that the massively successful album may be soon as too Americanised.
